This is the Arenal Volcano and was taken off our back porch. Most of the time in La Fortuna it was cloudy, but we had about an hour one morning and got to see most of the volcano. It is still active, but mainly smokes. Between 1968 and 2010 it was erupting fairly consistently. In 1968 an eruption killed 87 people in the town of Tabicon on the other side of the volcano.
