Partial S/N

The Missus and I spent the day volunteering at the Military Aviation Museum. Summer of Flight is over, and it was a windy, rainy day, so I spent part of my day prowling the hangars for pictures.

This is part of the serial number (s/n) of our North American P-51D Mustang, Double Trouble Two, which appears on the tail.

The full serial number is 44-63684, but appears on the tail as just 463684. The number, when decoded, is telling about America's overwhelming industrial might during WWII. The first two digits indicate the fiscal year in which the aircraft was ordered, in this case, 1944. The rest of it means it was the 63,684th aircraft ordered that year...and it was by no means anywhere near the end of the planes ordered by the government that year. Further, the US produced even larger numbers of aircraft (and ships, and tanks, and guns) in fiscal year 1945.
