Harem, Part 1: Sea Horses

Sandbridge beach is the northernmost point of the Outer Banks. It is a 15 minute drive from our home. So why do we drive 2.5 hours to North Carolina and rent a house for a week on the beach? In a word: horses. Specifically, the wild horses of Corolla.

I went out to the beach this morning to see what, if anything, was happening of photographic interest and saw a small herd of horses walking along the waterline, headed my way. I texted the Missus and our son about the sighting and they got out to watch what was to be an unfolding drama.

These horses were moving from the left to the right in this shot. They were moving inland a couple of steps to stay out of the surf. The horse on the left is the stallion, following his harem. The chestnut horse with the blond mane on the right is the dominant mare. She leads the harem around and decides when the harem will move and where it will move to. I have her to thank for their walk along the shore.
Amazing!
