Edit update: lowered the saturation a bit and cropped it to get more space on the right, thanks @roulin!)
Original: I guess not the best photo technically or compositionally (I wish I would have left more space on the right!), but I very much liked the whole business of the place. It's a bee-hive I have to pass by on my way to work, and today, it was just the day to see all the honey-making activity. I am glad I could zoom in and not to come too close, but it made it very hard to focus (well, as much as you can focus on the busy bees making their "honey-dance"), and it was hand-held and almost looking into the sun.
I would love to hear your comments and opinions on this. Thank you!
I really like this Vera. I like the lighting on the hives and bees. You are brave to get as close as you did. My dad had hives when I was growing up and they always scared me. Just remember you can always go back and take another shot. :)
Oh thank you all so much for liking the busy bees! It's so amazing in Germany - every little green patch of land is used for something, and here the bee hives are sitting right between our residential area, a major road, and two schools. With some small field and a meadow and a couple of private fruit gardens, these bees are pretty busy! One time we were passing by, and the bee keepers invited my kids to come over and see the hives, try the honey and take home honey combs. That was an excitement.
Susan, Nova, Vstap and Ann - I was really careful, making sure I don't attract any attention and not coming too close - it's a zoom, and it's cropped too. One bee kind of got interested in what I was doing, but then left as it seemed that they all were really busy with all the fruit trees in bloom.
Nova - That's what I tell myself all the time, that I can go back and do another take on something, but I am finding myself never going back. I guess distracted by all the other new possibilities around. It's the exciting part of photography for me, as I am figuring it out :)
Think I'm seeing the edited version. I'm tagging my friend Sue @suetre as she's a beekeeper and will I'm sure be interested to see this great shot. I very much like the angle and you get a real sense of a hot, drowsy afternoon.
Thank you all so much for leaving a comment for the busy bees!
Clare - yes, you already were looking at the edited photo. The cropping fixed my uneasiness with the composition, and the bees are standing out better with the overall very bright colors turned down a bit.
Barbara - I was brave because I had my 18-300 zoom lens with me. I think it adds bravery because it is so heavy, you feel you have a weapon in your hand! :)
Spanner, thanks for the compliment - your comment made me smile.
