Today, an attempt for my Get Pushed challenge from Lynda: a high-key photo. Sunny day, white curtain, some reading lights shining onto the subject. I will be happy to hear any kind of critique, as it was a trial and error process. Thank you!
I like the effect of this image very much. I've recently done some research on the definition of a high key (and low key) image. I thought I knew what the were before I started, but ended up confused as there is no universally agreed definition. I believe this image does qualify as it is predominantly light and the majority of the tones are below mid grey. As the first view one gets on 365 is against a light background, I believe that when posting this type of image it would benefit from a thin pencil boarder, in this instance a mid grey.
Vera, you did great. I love the DoF and the hint of color in the plant. @bob65 is right, there are many styles and instructions for high key photography.
Thank you so much for viewing and commenting on my hi-key photo. Bob @bob65, Lynda @lynbonn - I agree! While I was doing my little research to this, I was astounded by the variety of images that apparently qualifies as "high key". I guess, for a true "high key" photo with mostly light, a slightly better lighting set up would be needed that what I had on hand. It was fun getting there - lots to learn, but it was a fun project.
Bob - about the border. For some reason, I never think of borders for my pictures, but now that you mention it, I can definitely see the benefit of having one here. Just to give the picture more definition and its own "space".
Good use of light and shadow. High key to me is quite confusing -- I also have not really been able to sort it out. That said, this one intuitively seems to fit. The only concern I have is there is a little gray spot along the left side of the image.
(the only thing which I would avoid is the shadow in the right bottom corner)
