We have been expecting the brood-x 17-year cicadas, and finally, we found the first sign of it right on our front door! But it was already empty - apparently, they crawl out of their shells leaving those behind.

I totally remember the sound these used to make when I was a kid. It took me a decade or more to realize they aren't always around. Very cool photo. Brings back tons of memories.
Ok, I didn't know that brood 10 extended all the way up to Michigan. I rather like the empty shells, something perhaps wonderfully symbolic about them.
