leather-flower

Today Jack and Lily and I went to Green Spring Gardens, which is one of my favorite places in Virginia. Every time we walk here I find something new. Today was this leather-flower. I love the way the sepals curl up on the ends. The buds look like little Chinese lanterns and the seed pods are feathery -- they look like little fireworks (you can see a blurry one in the background). The vine twines around and has lots of tiny tendrils. J and L were appalled when I went off the path and practically had to climb into a bush to take the picture. At least I didn't pick it like some people I know ....
Great shot of an interesting flower. Going off the path paid off.
