After the bell concert at Behrend, we tried to find a few of the trees on our scavenger hunt list. The highlight of the evening for my mom was finding this branch under the bitternut hickory tree and making my daughter look like she had antlers. Found these may apples in the woods — all with their little “apples” while looking for the second tree — a sugar maple — at the Gospel Hill Burial Ground, which is near the campus. As we were getting back in the car, my mom quoted one of my dad’s favorite sayings: “you have to make your own fun in life.” He would have enjoyed tonight’s little jaunt (although he would have expected ice cream afterward).
