warming up the room by wiesnerbeth

warming up the room

It occurred to me last night that maybe the reason my living room is so freezing is because cold air is blowing in from the fireplace? I’ve never had a fireplace (and only learned how to light matches last week), so I really don’t understand how they work — is there something you can close off? Honestly, I’m still a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of boxes that are still unpacked and the giant hole and mold in my closet. So it seemed very fortunate that my good friend Katina made me this quilt before she moved away and stopped being the best neighbor ever . . . and it was the exact size as the fireplace opening. I wouldn’t say it’s cozy, but it’s definitely a bit warmer.
And it looks so pretty. Sorry you are having a rough move.

First, I don't believe you about the matches. Second, if you reach up in there, you might be able to find a handle to close the damper. Unfortunately, in my old house the fireplace (in my bedroom!) doesn't have a damper. Third, genius idea about hanging a little quilt there. But you might want to keep an eye on the back of it. Ash and dirt can blow down through the chimney. Forth, giant hole and mold in your closet? Welcome to my world! There's a weird sort of trapdoor thing in the ceiling of my closet. Lived here 36 years and have never opened it!
