On my father’s bookshelf, I found my old books that evoked my memory of that exciting day when these “forbidden” books were for the first time allowed to be sold after the Cultural Revolution. I remember that long queue outside the bookshop hours long before it was to open. I was a very happy girl.
Ksyu, you may be surprised at the books in this shot: Anton Chekhov’s short stories, Nikolay Chernyshevsky’s “What Is to Be Done? And Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”
I recognize Chekhov's face on the cover, right? I'm also surprised by such interesting interpretation of translation of the title “What Is to Be Done?" while in Russian it has more simple name 'Что делать?'= 'What should I do?'.. It's really interesting. I adore Chekhov stories, there so many life situations and humour there. I admire your collection and very touched that you have some Russian classic authors there! Thank you very much for sharing! :)
LOve the sepia look to give it the flash back in time. I can only imagine what life was like with such control and restrictions. Aren't you lucky in your lifetime to see things opening up. Great composition
You are a living part of history! I vaguely remember learning about these times in school. World history is filled with the ones in power trying to control every part of society. I don't understand how some in my country can think this was good! But there are many that want to give more and more power to our government. I am so impressed that in spite of these books being forbidden your family managed to have them. Wonderful story and picture.
Hello, Yao! My not really sensitive to literature family (sister and father) are going to throw out our wonderful library, so I'm in desperate search of new owners for our books. One of them is an old book of short stories by Chekhov(1985). I thought that it would be nice addition to your book collection, though it's in Russian. I'm ready to send you this souvenir in NZ(I did it once for my other friend there, though it was knitted scarf) as a friendly gesture in my sincere hope that the book will find its home and peace.
Best regards, Ksenia.
@ksyu You are too kind. I would love to have the book, but shall we make an exchange, is there an English book you would like to have. Since you are studying for the exam, I would love the post you a book that may be useful to you.
@yaorenliu Ah! Thanks! It's very pleasant! Well, I prefer a wide range of books: fantasy, classic, detective, novel. I just didn't want to bother you so much, so maybe you have some used book that you can share with good reader... Bradbury, Austen, Kristy, Hemingway would be warmly welcomed by me! I mean just one of those books.. and not heavy(the post costs are not that cheap! :))
I loved Hemingway, but the language is becoming too old fashioned. I shall find you some new books with modern language. But we should not exchange privatel address as this is not secure in this forum. Any place for an air drop? @ksyu
