Day 1 of our Cape Cod adventure took us 48 miles southwest to Newport, Rhode Island. It was a full day of mansion touring, site-seeing, shopping, eating and exploring.
Our day began at The Breakers, the summer cottage of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, 1/3 the size of the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina but just as over-the-top and impressive. Everywhere we looked was eye candy. Platinum wallpaper because sterling silver tarnish, magnificent staircases and ornate ceilings in every room. One was more amazing than the next.
I especially like that HBO's The Gilded Age was filmed in some of The Breakers' rooms. I can't wait to watch that show again now that we've "lived" in that era for a couple hours.
