Just saw this link that Eric Kim had posted on Facebook, though there does seem to be some debate regards when some of the shots were taken. Still an interesting collection none the less.
Oh, and for those of you who feel we should not take photos of people in public, allowing future generation's to see the times we currently live in, then, I trust, you would have no interest in viewing these images? Just sayin'
Incredible shots! I love it when history is shown in colour. The b&w world of history book images from this era often alienate the viewer and make him forget that the world was just as colourful then as it is now. Thanks for sharing - and reminding that street photography does serve a purpose, storing cultural history of everyday life.
Totally blown away. Amazing shots, i would love to go back and take photos of the same places now and im guessing not a lot would have changed. I must say though the Grand Palais (the pic with the Michelin balloon in) is possibly one of the must stunning buildings ive ever been in. I went to see the Bvlgari exhibition there a couple of years ago and had a bit of a nosey around the back of the walls on way to toilet as you do and was taken aback at the vast amount of space, light (even though it was dark? and beautiful ironwork.
I think the French adopted that uniform in 1915 and the helmet in 1916 so that dates several of the pics, I think some of the others are later like from the 20s. Super nice pics and well preserved. Film photography around from what, 1894? so 20-30 years old by then, so I guess they're able to make decent film by this time. I bet it was frickin expensive though. nice find.
Great photos Jase, thanks for sharing. So bright and vibrant with colour. I don't do a lot of street photography, but notice a lot of the streeties on this site use black and white rather than colour. Is there a reason for this, or just peoples preference?
Leonie It's generally street photography in general, not just here. The main reason, is to try and focus attention on the person in the shot, city centres can be often very colourful with a lot of distractions. That being said there are some people who work in colour.
Amazing history and it sure turns my world upside down when my poor brain has only ever thought of the turn of the century in black and white. Thanks for sharing :)
