Hi Vince. I use Lightroom. I put software in the "too hard basket" for a long, long time, finally got Lightroom and so glad I did. It's also excellent for organising your pictures on your hard drive. There should be a discount available for you if you are at school, you just need to send some kind of proof of enrolment when you purchase it.
I know there are a lot of free programs about the place that other people will probably tell you about - I haven't used any of those so won't pretend I know!
I've used Picmonkey, Ribbet (both free and online), Photoscape, Gimp (both free, but need to be downloaded) and Photoshop Elements 12 (not free, disc form) and I personally prefer to use either RIbbet or Photoscape. Although I try to do minimal editing and I really don't have the patience to learn a lot editing skills (I'm working on it though.)
I use Photoshop Elements and Google Nik software mostly and also Paintshop Pro - I love to play around with editing but still don't know what I am doing - it is all just what takes my fancy at the time
My biggest recommendation would be, (if you don't already) to shoot in RAW. This gives you the flexibility to change so much of the basics of the photo, without having to edit too much. You can use Lightroom without needing to know too much, and you can get a monthly subscription from around $20 a month.
If you want something good and basic, Picasa is awesome. Its easy to use, does a very good job and is free (my favourite four letter word).
I'm a little crazy and use Photoshop. You can do anything you want to the photo, and if you can't figure out how to do something, Youtube will have a great tutorial on it.
Whatever you do, get into editing your photo's, it is the next step in becoming an awesome photographer.
I use mostly Photoshop but also have a few other programs (like FX Photo Studio) that will let me quickly add a border or a fast effect, when I don't want to spend the time fine tuning every aspect of the edit.
