Editing

I was just browsing my photos comments about using photo editing software, which got me thinking what is the best editing software.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Vince. I use Lightroom. I put software in the "too hard basket" for a long, long time, finally got Lightroom and so glad I did. It's also excellent for organising your pictures on your hard drive. There should be a discount available for you if you are at school, you just need to send some kind of proof of enrolment when you purchase it.

I know there are a lot of free programs about the place that other people will probably tell you about - I haven't used any of those so won't pretend I know!

@aliha thank you for that, useful information and great help

I've used Picmonkey, Ribbet (both free and online), Photoscape, Gimp (both free, but need to be downloaded) and Photoshop Elements 12 (not free, disc form) and I personally prefer to use either RIbbet or Photoscape. Although I try to do minimal editing and I really don't have the patience to learn a lot editing skills (I'm working on it though.)

I like Picasa, it's free. Great for light editing. For any major editing, I use Photoshop Elements.

I use Photoshop Elements and Google Nik software mostly and also Paintshop Pro - I love to play around with editing but still don't know what I am doing - it is all just what takes my fancy at the time

Any search for photo editing editing software would be not complete if without giving Zoner Photo Studio a good look.

I like Picassa, but it's the only one I use. I try not to use it too much, but it does come in handy for cropping and straightening.

I like full blown Photoshop

My biggest recommendation would be, (if you don't already) to shoot in RAW. This gives you the flexibility to change so much of the basics of the photo, without having to edit too much. You can use Lightroom without needing to know too much, and you can get a monthly subscription from around $20 a month.
If you want something good and basic, Picasa is awesome. Its easy to use, does a very good job and is free (my favourite four letter word).
I'm a little crazy and use Photoshop. You can do anything you want to the photo, and if you can't figure out how to do something, Youtube will have a great tutorial on it.
Whatever you do, get into editing your photo's, it is the next step in becoming an awesome photographer.

I use mostly Photoshop but also have a few other programs (like FX Photo Studio) that will let me quickly add a border or a fast effect, when I don't want to spend the time fine tuning every aspect of the edit.

For management and adequate processing I use Faststone. http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

@karlow75 Actually $9.99 for LR and PSCC, the Photographer's package. I trust it is still so offered. I have had it for 6 months now.

I'm not sure if I'm late to the party but if you're using Mac, Pixelmator is really cool! Check it out!
