This week I'm working with my telephoto lens. Now this lens isn't anything special, it's the kit lens that came with my camera. It's a 55-250 and goes up (down?) to a f/4. I don't actually shoot with it much unless I'm outside with a tripod pointing it at the moon. That's why I'm working with it this week.
Ok so it's after lunch and I have a little time before my next meeting so I start getting my gear together to head out for a little wander.
She sees this and says feigning interest, "oh heading out, what are you shooting with today."
I say, "oh it's a telephoto, kit lens really. I never really use this one so I thought I'd give it a shot."
get it "give it a SHOT" - come on that's clever
and she says "that's kind of small for a telephoto isn't it?"
and I reiterate "yea it's a kit lens"
I get, "I have a REAL telephoto lens, huge one oh that one only goes to 250 well if you did any wildlife shots you'd need something much more powerful than that."
oh my GOD do I not care what lens you have really I don't
where IS this lens, oh right at home because you never actually TAKE ANY PHOTOS
I'm ok I'm getting good at breathing exercises.
I should have asked her how her lunar eclipse shot turned out because I'm pretty sure she didn't take any.
That's funny! Every time I wish I had a longer lens than my kit telephoto, I ask myself, "If I had one, would I carry it around, and could I hand hold it?" and go back to enjoying what I have.
I am enjoying this series; wish for you that it was all made up, but think it's awesome that you're turning this curiously obnoxious person into story-art.
@aponi Your coworker (sort of like my onion?) to me seems to be the gift that keeps on giving! She seems to represent all that photographers are not, and she seems so totally unaware herself! Very funny even though I know she is annoying to you. Think of all of us she is entertaining!
Today I flipped over my calendar for April. It's a butterfly on a butterfly bush. She sneered about how her calendar is an eagle with a fish in its talon. Yea but see I actually took the shot on my calendar myself. I'm not competing with the calendar you got free with your national geographic subscription.
I'm sorry Kathryn, but this whole story is pretty hysterical! I think we've all endured mindless comments from people about our photography.
Just remember...it's not the gear, but the photographer, that makes great images. Keep up the good work and don't let her get to you. You do great work!!
@aponi well, you know... look on the bright side... at least she noticed your calendar ;p (no one ever notices mine!) but seriously... think how sad and limited her life must be if she feels a need to engage in this type of conversation...
I would engage her in a conversation about famed National Geographic photographer, DeWitt Jones, who has also published several books on iPhone Photography. Obviously, to him, it's about the results, not the equipment.
@danette Nice going, Danette! Seeing the many comments above, I think you have her now that she's telling you about her lenses. Feign sweetness and ask her to bring in her camera and you can do some street photography together on your lunch hour. If she says she doesn't work with that genre, ask her to bring in some samples of her work and tell her it sounds as though she can offer some good advice. In essence, walk toward her rather than away from her... Good luck... Her antics are amusing us all... Don't let her get to you!

Clearly a jealous person but thank her for the fun we are getting at her expense!
UGH
