Photo ops in Vegas?

August 2nd, 2016
Ok, so I have booked a trip to Las Vegas in late October. ONLY because my niece is getting married! So the question is, what are the photo ops around there? The Hoover Dam holds no interest for me at all, not interested in photographing hotels or fake Eiffel Towers, and the Grand Canyon is too far away considering all that will be going on that weekend. Obviously there will be plenty of street photography which will be fun. But what other opportunities are there? Any nature reserves, waters (Haha! In the desert, I know!), crazy wildlife, etc, etc...

The neon museum is very cool, but you may need to make reservations so keep that in mind. Valley of Fire state park is not far from there and is very scenic.

If you travel outside LV to the Hoover Dam, you have a lot of opportunity for creative views of this miracle of modern (well, 20th century) engineering. Truly, it would not, and could not, be built today in the 21st century...

Try to find resources to get you into the infrastructure. As always, web references. I have found these folks were great to deal with, but that was before the current "threat level."

Red Rock Canyon -- think about lighting for timing your visit: http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/lasvegas/hikes-trails/

if you google las vegas photo tours you'll come up with a number of hits... i would see if there was a tour that would get you into the desert for sunrise or sunset... a gazillion years ago we went to Morocco and took a tour into the Sahara to watch the sunrise... it was AMAZING...

Another vote for Red Rock.

And the Welcome sign is required.

I know you said not interested in the strip and it's "fake" buildings. But I bet it would be fun to get some of it at night! With the lights I bet it would be spectacular. And the dancing waters would be fun outside of the Bellagio! We went to Vegas for a long weekend and it was fun! Have a great trip!!

It has been a few years since I've been to Vegas, but:
Add another vote for Red Rock Canyon. Highly recommended.

There's lots of cool areas not far outside town. Charleston Peak to the NW is another one I remember.

I lived in Vegas 2005-2008.

The west end of the Summerlin Parkway has a good view of the city and valley. Best at night.

Water in Lake Mead. Years of drought have left 'bathtub rings' on the rock walls and docs sitting on dry land.

Water and nature in the Las Vegas Springs Preserve. Botanical gardens with a macro lens could be interesting. The springs are the reason Vegas was first settled. They still flow, fed by an underground river originating from snow melt in the mountains to the west.

Red Rocks, yes. If you go early, observe the speed limit, because cops (rangers?) believe lots of tickets will make it safer for bicyclists.
