Just wondering, how many people who use the 365 Project are professionals, amateurs, students in training, hobbyists, moms-with-cameras, or something else?
I for one am a professional. I'm a freelance photojournalist and landscape photographer. Everyone else?
I had photog 101 in college, with film. I'm also a hobbyist and Mom with a camera. Definitely not professional but hoping to rise to amateur level after this project!
ooooooo see I am always weary on answering this one lol
I am studying photography and am half way through my diploma in NZ, I do get paid for my work - sometimes lol BUT I would sell my soul for the chance to get the photo I want to get. Its not about the $$ its about the passion and satisfaction knowing that, that photo is my work =)
I think Ill classify myself as a student ,still learning a lot in photography and 365 is a great learning experience for me and thanks to @gavinci for being my mentor in photo processing! the master!
I still think I'm pretty amateur-ish but I'm currently a nervous wreck waiting to see if I get the chance to get a chance to be a photography major at my dream school.
Ahhhh... Waiting for something like that is just the worst, isn't it?
I'm a mix... if it involves a car or motorsports, I am professional. I will not shoot that stuff without getting paid anymore. When I'm wandering around with a Holga? Just another amateur thinking I'm making "art." LOL! Photography will never be my sole income as I have a dislike of wedding/portrait photography and National Geographic hasn't called me yet, but I do get paid for most of it I do. Take that how you please...
See, that's what I thought! Most "pro's" I think are spending too much time on Mt. Olympus to fool with sites like this. I love actually interacting with people, and if you haven't found my blog yet I absolutely love to write tutorials and teach people how to do what I do.
BTW...my definition of a professional photographer is someone who earns a living primarily as a photographer. Trust me: it has nothing to do with skill or quality, as some would put it.
I am a paid portrait photographer. Maternity, babies, children, families, etc. The images for my 365 aren't anything like my paid work! These photos are (so far) strictly to express my creativity where I can't with clients.
Mmmm don't know whether to classify myself as hobbyist or amateur. I am hoping to become student too and would love to take it further but first I need to get a lot better. Still fairly clueless.
I would say, amateur/hobbyist! (and student, because I'm constantly teaching myself and always learning something new about the D60!) =) But someday, a pro!
Pro here - both my day job and my part-time business have me titled "photographer". Day job - forensic photographer (crime scene investigator) and business - portraits and weddings/events.
I am as amatuer as they come. I used to work for Lifetouch as an office manager and got to go to their bi-annual meetings. At one of those, a professional photographer totally inspired me with his work and made me see that taking pictures was more than having someone stand there and say "cheese". I am lucky enough to live in Montana, so plenty of things to shoot. I would love to learn how to get better and have my husband trust me with his camera.
I'm a mom with a camera who does this as a hobby but sometimes gets paid for taking pictures at events. I am a freelance writer and photographer for two local websites.
I am a Amateur I like to take picture of family and events. I am also a scrapbooker so I though I would try this and maybe it will get me to understand and try new features on my camera.
Working full time in marketing & studying photography after hours. Looking to make the shift to paid shoots by the end of 2011. A couple of shoots a month, either on weekends or after hours and I'd be stoked!
Mom with camera, lol very amature. I have been taking crappy pictures of Scotland for years. Somehow what I see, and what comes out are 2 very different things. Travelling to Singapore and maybe KL in the spring, I need to learn something by then!
I just received a D-SLR for Christmas. I have been taking photographs since I was a small child but with no training. I just took photos to capture friends and family. I would like to get into the more artistic side of it now.
Complete amateur. Got a Canon one year ago and have been playing with it quite a bit. Hoping to take some classes this year to learn more but for now, I'm just having fun.
I have always liked taken pictures since I was a kid, I have 1,000's of photographs but I am an Amatuer ~ reading and learning as I go along. It is a fun process.
I did wedding photography in the past, so in that role I would consider myself a professional photographer. A professional in the sense I was offering a service and being paid for it.
However, I would say I'm now in the hobbyist/dads-with-cameras group. I'd say I'm intermediate in my understanding and use of a camera. I'd still like to improve my understanding of using flash outdoors and modifying light.
If being a professional means you get paid for it then I am because I take photos for my paper and magazines I work for. However, I have no clue what I'm doing. I'm doing the project to see the beauty around me but also try to learn how to use the camera well.
I am an amateur that has never taken a class or read anything all the way through about photography, lol. I'm also a mom-with-a-camera (as many of my shots suggests). But I would like to someday be a professional photography.
Amateur. I have taken photos since I was a kid. Have always enjoyed photography. Learning how to take better photos. I can take lots more with digital and see the results, I do not have to wait till I have the money to get film developed--so it makes it more fun. :)
I am completely a beginner amateur in photography although it takes now more and more time of my days. Just browsing and , reading and commenting in this site consumes quite a lot of my time now, so I guess I am a kind of student also , here. I occasionally I use photographing with a simple camera or with a web camera in my professional work as a therapist with children. Use it as a kind of creative and means or expressive tool just like paint or a crayon. I intend to use what I see and learn about photographing in my experience here to write about subjects that interest me in my profession and combine concepts and examples from photography and psychology. But as said I am completely an avid amateur.
I am just doing things that I would like to do when I grow old... doing some experimental photography using basic equipment, simple camera and as much as possible less processing.
I have been slowly building up to a professional over the last few years. I have photographed sporting clubs, childcare settings, families and one wedding so I would like to consider myself a Pro. I charge for my services so this is a profession... in the literal sense. It is also my ABSOLUTE PASSION!
mama with a camera...just trying to document more of the day to day stuff...in the past the camera only comes out for events...now it sits on the counter.
I'm a crazy mum with a camera but have really pushed myself with 365 to take photos other than my bub. I love taking photos and am known in my circle of friends as the one that has the camera attached to my hand. I take my Canon 400D everywhere even though it is a bit bulky! Haha.
I'm a total amateur - I wanted to brush up on my photography skills and do something creative with a little bit of my time as I am working and studying which takes up a lot of my time. My photos aren't so good but at least I now know how to turn off the automatic setting!
I'm a total amateur as well. Although I'd really like to go to college for photography and design type things. Being behind a camera is my favorite thing to do even if it's just messing around.
Used to take photo classes back in the days of using a darkroom and a manual SLR. That seems eons ago. Even owned a Kodak disk camera once upon a long time ago. :)
Now I'm an amateur mom with lots of cameras. Just obtained my first DSLR a couple months back. Have to figure out how it works though before I try my hand at digital editing. :)
A mum with a really old camera wanting to enjoy taking photos of my life and share them. I never used to take many photos, so I am enjoying playing with my camera and taking lots of photos of what I am doing each day.
I am addicted to bringing my camera everywhere, lol......total amateur here! No, not even skilled enough to be an amateur.......Ill go with just a girl, with a camera having fun, and here to learn :-)
total amateur....in love with photography though. it is a passion i plan to expand on....hope to take a few classes soon here. this website has been something special for me. never wanna not be behind a camera!
Amateur...wanna be professional. I picked up the camera in October and haven't put it down! I'm loving this project...the accountability of having to post a picture every day helps me look at everyday things in a new way.
Sort of professional I'd say. Getting there...? Got my degree in photography, been shooting weddings for about 10 years, but not for any money and not for a business up until 2 years ago. Now I am a second shooter in my friend's wedding business. (She's the professional, she's a full time photographer.) We've been picking up...got 15 confirmed weddings this year! But I still have my first job as an art teacher and a swim coach. The weddings are on the weekend.
Would you say that was professional?? I'm not sure...that's why I say sort of pro. Kind of...almost...lol. One day full time....Getting there. :)

Amateur/hobbyist...I love to take picture even though they may not always be amazing. But every once in a while, i get that really WICKED COOL AWESOME shot. I use my LG camera phone and a Sony camera. Nothing too spectacular, although i am pretty thrilled with some of the shots i get.
Complete amateur...but it's been fun so far! And will be really fun today since it's a Steelers playoff day! I will probably have some good pictures from the bar...
I have sold a few cards, prints, and been hired out for lifestyle portraits, but still have so much to learn so I consider myself a hobbyist. Dreaming of being a pro, someday.
@edreamer Hey, everyone starts out as a student or amateur. No one jumps straight to making money from photography. It all depends on how much you want it.
I still have the full time day job during the week but my weekends are getting busy with paid gigs - so semi professional? I probably have enough gear to call my self professional LOL - which is why I have to keep the day job. :)
Hobbyist I suppose. I would love to do more with it but I don't have the money for photography classes or a good camera and not a lot of time at this point either. So for now I'll continue to play around with my little Samsung point-and-shoot and hopefully learn something along the way. :)
at the moment i would say amature, mom with camera lol BUT i've applied to go back to school for photography in the fall! I'm super excited and can't wait to make a career out of it!
I keep wanting to say 'artist' instead of any options you gave...why? I don't really know but I love photography, always have. I got my degree in Graphic Design and have taken numerous photography classes while in school. So maybe that would mean I'm a hobbyist? I intend to sell prints of my work, but I have no clue how to go about doing that just yet...some day.
Amateur.. I do photoshoots on the side sometimes, but I definitely couldn't make it a full time job,.. I would go crazy having to shoot stuff people tell me to shoot. I like just going out and shooting what I feel like shooting. It's relaxing. :)

Amateur. And even that sounds a bit much. Argh.
Amateur, student, hobbyist, and professional wanna be.
Someone once paid me for one of my photographs, and I have had a few photos published.
still a definite hobby.
