A friend asked me for advice about a good camera (ideally, lightweight, pocket or hiking backpack size) for wide angle photography. They live in the mountains near Glacier National Park so have lots of opportunity to photograph vistas, They do a lot of hiking in that area and he does a lot of skiing during the winter. It's not the kind of photography I do so I'm hoping some of you might have useful recommendations. Main criteria include: (a) landscape-oriented potential, wide angle but probably not super-wide with a lot of distortion, (b) ease of use, (c) portability when hiking and skiing.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
Yeah... I know... not super helpful... but it was the first thing that popped into my mind... otherwise isn’t it just about the lens rather than the camera?
@northy I agree, but they said they've been disappointed (they may have the 11, though) in what they can get. And it is the lens, but they are looking for a point-shoot setup, not having to have a camera with different lenses. So I'm guessing they need something that can do 18 - 35mm equivalents, but just don't know anything about pocket cameras (I use my phone for that as well).
Nikon Coolpix P1000 is an amazing camera. All the Coolpix cameras are fantastic point and shoots. It has a lens comparable to 24-3000mm. It's not real cheap (nearly $1000), but these camera take amazing pictures. I have the 610 and my friend has the 700. She got photos of Saturn's rings during the Christmas Star event.
While my DSLRs have always been Nikon, my compact/pocket cameras have always (~15 years) been Canon Powershots. The sensors are excellent and they can be used in full manual mode. I don't know if any of them have lenses that will get as wide as 18mm, though. 24mm seems pretty standard for the small lenses,
I recommend the Osmo pocket, it's small and light. Shoots video as well as stills, and you can set it to shoot raw or jpgs. I take one when we go on long cycle rides. My husband even won a local photo competition with a shot using one. Link below is a landscape I shot on a bike trip last year.
I have an EOS M50 and the kit lens is 24-55mm. I also have the 28mm macro lens - but sometimes use this for landscape too. I prefer my dslr but as a lighter option for carrying around when on walks this fits my needs perfectly. It is really lightweight and you can bluetooth to phone. Although - I also have the iPhone 12 and get some pretty good shots from that too.
Something from the Sony RX100 range - there are a number available... choose one in the right price range with a 24-70mm f1.8 lens. The M3 fits the bill and is reasonable priced.
