New Artist Challenge #47 Edward Weston

February 17th, 2013
Thank you Ann for finding the list of artists that have been covered, it is an impressive list and in my 6 months here on 365 I have really enjoyed the interpretations of the different artists.

For this challenge the 47th one, I choose Edward Weston. I still remember a visit to MOMA to see a retrospective of his work many, many years ago. Upon seeing one of his photographs of a pepper for the first time, I was stunned and intrigued. Who knew a pepper could be so sensual? I needed to sit down after I saw the orchid.

Edward Weston was a 20th century American photographer. He has been called "one of the most innovative and influential American photographers and "one of the masters of 20th century photography." I really believe that to be true. He photographed still life, landscapes, portraits, mostly in b&w. He did photograph with kodachrome late in life, so there are some color images. His philosophy: to see the final picture before making the exposure.
There are many sites that you can read about his work and see his photos, this one is run by his family
http://www.edward-weston.com/edward_weston.htm

I think this challenge offers a wide range of subjects for people to interpret , so hopefully this challenge has something for everyone.

"Success in photography, portraiture especially, is dependent on being able to grasp those supreme instants which pass with the ticking of a clock, never to be duplicated - so light, balance - expression must be seen - felt as it were - in a flash, the mechanics and technique being so perfected in one as to be absolutely automatic. " Edward Weston

The challenge:
The rules are fairly simple: study Weston's work (Google will help you here) and then :

Take a photograph recreating a particular work as closely as possible to the original -

Or photograph something in a style that is reminiscent of the genre – mood, light, composition, color – whatever reminds you of Weston's work.

The challenge will run from today February 17 and will finish midnight EDT February 25th. All pictures must have been taken and uploaded during this time period. You should tag your picture ac-weston and please feel free to share on here.

I look forward to seeing many photos from the very talented folks on 365!
