Vote now for the WWYD118 Delft challenge!

October 16th, 2014
Thanks to everyone who participated in the WWYD118 'Delft' cahllenge. I wish I hadn't asked for more edits, it would have been so much easier for me to just post the six first entries her as finalists. No kidding, I'm very happy with the quadrupling of entries. We now have a total of 24! Well done. They can all be seen here.

This was the original:

Below are five finalists in random order, please vote for one edit. The winner will have the privilege of hosting the WWYD119 Challenge!

Here are the finalists:

4. WWYD118 - @sioux Sue

5. Think Pink 2 & What Would You Do? - @olivetreeann Ann H. LeFevre ace

Sour grapes! Sour grapes! Sour grapes! Whatever I say, I know that is what people will shriek! But why of those shortlisted are so few faithful to the original? Was this supposed to be an exercise in PS Layers or some clever Gizmo on your iPod etc.? There were so many really nice renderings of your image entered, without distortion or addition, many showing other photo effects from the past. I liked Frank Hymus'@frankhymus B&W, though I'd have preferred it cropping the modern buildings (right) and cloning out the vapour trails. I Loved Anazad's, @anazad511 which has the feel of an old photo, and she did crop out the new stuff on the right. Tina and I both enjoyed @archielogical 's canvass effect. @chris17 @leonbuys83 @mikegifford (bit like a Van Gogh) @ounooi @hippiechick13 and others produced versions which respected the original, but gave a particular emphasis or twist to the original. And I especially liked one of my 365 Friends' presentation, Saxa van Eijnsbergen's @overalvandaan , which looked as though this was an early plate photo, complete with scratches and blurry lens.

But clearly you preferred images that had had elements - like pink flamingos! - added. Layers etc. is a super tool...when used appropriately. You will have gathered Tina and I love your country, we have visited The Netherlands many times over more than 40 year now. I have given links to you to some of the images of Holland I have posted. Dare I suggest that we have more respect for its history and art (Vermeer etc.) than you, and some of the authors, you chose do? I'm just grateful you didn't select the pink sunglasses! - much though we all support those that work to overcome breast cancer - and not the 'Madonna' - which Tina and I thought tasteless. That's our opinion, this is an open forum, you and others have their opinions. We still love your home city of Rotterdam BTW, we had a lovely stay there two years ago (a tour of the Port etc.) but perhaps not the way you see it through your iPhone app!

@ivan To come to Meks defence, there are normally a couple of challenges running consecutively, the WWYD and the RAWCOMP challenge. The WWYD challenge is accepted that anything goes, so it does attend to attract the off the wall edits as well as the traditional. Then its just a matter of taste, you like or you don't like the images. Alternately the RAWCOMP, is a challenge that only uses a RAW editor whether it be Camera Raw, Lightroom or Aperture. Therefore resulting in more traditional images.
We all have to accept the decision of the incumbent host, it does take a deal of effort to host and run a challenge, and all hosts past, present and future should be appreciated for the effort they put in, I have no doubt you agree with me there.

Of course I accept your final paragraph. But the choice seems weighted, as I've explained. @archielogical

@ivan Hi Ivan. Thanks for your comment. I sure do like your honest opinion!

I once entered a challenge three years ago. I was really disappointed I wasn't in the top 5. I can't remember the challenge, not even the image, but I'm still convinced my edit was the best. You made me remember. And you made me smile.

It changed my attitude toward 365 back then. It's not about my pictures, or yours. It's not about comments, good or bad. And it's not about favs and the PP. It's about a story. In my case it's about my story. Perhaps you noticed the lack of interest/comments under my pictures and the decimated number of view. I don't mind. I enjoy the wandering me, the lonesome cowboy doing his thing without other thinking something about that. That said, I do like a compliment, a challenge or a discussion now and then. It's what kept me going for over three years now, looking at the world with a different eye!

You have a good gift of observation. My choices are indeed 'weighted', as it is, of course, with all single-jury contests. Funny enough I started a discussion a few weeks ago about the fact I hardly ever agree with the public opinion when it comes to voting. So, thank you very much for confirming my otherness. I take it as a compliment for sure!

You say there were so many really nice renderings of my image entered, without distortion or addition, many showing other photo effects from the past. Indeed, and I did like them all. Without exception. You ask if it was suppost to be an exercise in PS Layers or some clever Gizmo. No. It wasn't. In fact there are no rules what so ever in the What Would You Do challenge. Just do what you do... I just seem to like the 'addition' a little more than the 'filters'. My original image was already 'filtered', like all my Hipsta prints. I little bit of 'you' was what I was looking for. I guess it's the privilege of the host. I hope you keep entering and some day you can make your own thought-out decisions in any of the challenges. Or perhaps you can, if you like, make your own challenge with your own rules. I will be happy to be the first to enter, although I doubt if I will ever make a chance :-)

Keep shooting Ivan. Perhaps we'll meet in my beautiful Rotterdam for a pint and a firm discussion about photography.

@archielogical Thanks for your reply too! You forgot the mention ETSOOI. Not the challenge for @ivan though. I think.
October 18th, 2014
Let's vote for one of the above just another day :-)
@ivan you forgot to vote!
October 18th, 2014
@ivan Well, thank you for taking up the cause Ivan. @mastermek @archielogical The issue I have with "RAW Edit Challenge" is that they want to stick to just the raw editor, Camera Raw (or Lightroom) for Adobe, and there is so much that you can't do properly there (Lightroom similarly) and yet remain true to the material but still make something special. And ETSOOI is also just a gimmick. Ah well...
