I am truly chuffed to have won the last Artist Challenge - thank you to Wendy for hosting and to all those who participated.
I am choosing Australian artist Jane Bennett. Bennett is best known for her work recording Sydney’s disappearing industrial and maritime heritage. She has built a significant body of work portraying iconic sites, structures and vessels.
I love the harbour and industrial and urban landscapes and came across her work while I was looking up information for some of my photos.
The challenge will run from today 22nd February 2016 and end on Friday 11th March 2016 - (extending to end of the weekend -13th)
There are no rules apart from taking the photo during the time frame. You may take a photograph that is in the artist's style, or simply be inspired by the artist's work. You may also enter as many pictures as you please
You may opt to post your entry on to this discussion. if you do, simply click on the three dots (…) at the bottom of your photo’s narrative, copy the Embed Code and paste it on your comment here. you may submit multiple entries.
Hello,
I am Jane Bennett, the artist whose work has inspired your latest competiton. It is rather ironic that this is a photography competition, as photography has never had any place in the creation of my work. I have only ever used photography to record the work in progress on the easel & the completed painting.
While I was painting from the top of the Anzac Bridge while it was under construction, I shared the site with David Moore, one of Australia's best known photographers. Although I couldn't quite paint as quickly as he could take photos, I think aesthetically the results were about even.
Even my largest paintings have all been done on site, "en plein air".
Please keep me informed about the progress of this competition, as
I will be interested to see who is able to come up with the photo that best imitates one of my paintings!
Cheers, Jane
@janebennett Hi Jane - so pleased you popped in. The artist challenge on 365 has been going for quite a long time and the artists chosen have been both photographers and painters. I came across your Industrial Revelation site while I was looking for information for photographs I have taken around Sydney and loved your paintings. I thought they would be a great inspiration for the challenge as people can choose to photograph the industrial and heritage areas where they live and if they are into post processing - as many of us are - try and capture the texture and mood of your paintings. I love that you paint "en plein air" and will keep my eye out for you when I am out and about around Sydney.
@annied
Hi Annie, Thanks so much, & honoured to be an inspiration! I love that people are now recording the changes in the areas where they work & live. When I was at art school realistic painting of any was heavily discouraged.
I tried to post a link to my Anzac Bridge paintings & some Barangaroo work that could be of interest, however I apparently didn't format it correctly.
If you'd like to see some of these works in the flesh,I'm having a show of my remaining Anzac Bridge construction paintings in both the Glebe Library & the Frances Keevil Gallery, Bay Village, 28-34 Cross st Double Bay April 28 - May 28.
There will be an "In Conversation" event at the Glebe Library 6.30 pm Thur May 12th, where the historian Shirley Fitzgerald & I will discuss the history of the Anzac Bridge & Bays Precinct area in front of the paintings & you're very welcome to attend.
Cheers,
Jane
@janebennett I will note down the show dates as I would love to see your paintings - the 'in conversation' event I will definitely try to get to - Anzac Bridge is my favourite and I loved The Bays Precinct discovery day last year - especially the Power Station at White Bay. Thank you for letting me know.
I have been making an effort to try and record changes in Sydney and surrounding areas for a couple of years now - wish I had thought of it earlier as so much is changing. I want to get Millers Point behind Barrangaroo to photograph the area before it all disappears.
I have linked to your Industrial Revelation site above - I just copied and pasted the web address. I will check for more Anzac Bridge and Barangaroo links.
thanks again :)
Super choice Annie. Living in a small town with no tall buildings or big bridges nearby I hope that I can manage to emulate her works by using one (or some) of our heritage buildings.
@janebennett Aha, interesting! Thanks for commenting. You triggered me to enter the theme, which I haven't done for quite some time. I suppose that is a good thing.
Nice choice @annied :-)
@annied thanks Annie...trying to work on specific areas in post processing...Bennett has those super rich tones and we don't have that here at this moment! actually tomorrow we may be covered in snow! so I had to help it along a bit!
Hi @annied Jane is having a little trouble posting to the discussion board. While I help her work through the problem I'll post a message here on her behalf...
@Scrivna thanks for your help Ross it is greatly appreciated
@janebennett ah that is a beautiful painting of that area - I am quite pleased with how mine turned out - would have been nice if the sky was more interesting but it was a 30 degree day with mostly cloudless blue skies.
That crane is gorgeous.
I think this is a 365 first as I don't believe any of the artists we have done in this challenge has visited us before! I hope we do your pictures justice Jane! I'm looking forward to studying your work and coming up with my own contribution.
@olivetreeann@annied We have Thomas Leuthard gracing the Artist Challenge once, he helped picked the top 5 photos and eventually gave a message to the winner. But it's all done via email, so I guess this one is a first. Congrats Annie, great choice, I might join in. =)
@altadc Oh, I remember that now Alta- my 6 years on this site and my memory is starting to go!
@annied I really hope I can get to the Steel Stacks for this one, but I've got a busy week ahead. Fingers crossed so to speak (oh that's an American thing for luck- which I don't really believe in, but it sounds fun to say!).

@annied Love the rust on the old steam crane. This is the canvas it most resembles -'Cockatoo Island Triptych-Sutherland dock 2006 oil on canvas 46x92cm each.Left hand panel of triptych https://www.facebook.com/JaneBennett.Art/photos/a.857188284314392.1073741850.192504250782802/857188387647715/?type=3&theater
