As i am getting ready to post the first Get Pushed challenge for 2017, and as the beginning of the year seems to bring renewed interest in this challenge, i thought i would post a separate thread explaining what it's all about...
Q. What is the "get pushed" challenge?
A. In "get pushed" you will be paired up with someone else and you will each challenge the other to shoot something a little different than they would normally shoot. So if your partner mostly takes photographs of nature, you might challenge them to take a picture of a person, or something urban. If they mostly shoot big things, you might challenge them to shoot something small. Or perhaps a challenge might be to develop a skill such as shooting white-on-white, low-key, long exposures, etc.
The objective is to try something new and quite possibly out of your comfort zone. You also get the bonus of meeting folks on 365 you might not otherwise interact with.
Q. Do I work with the same partner each week?
A. Nope! Each week I put out a list of pairings and in theory you will have a different partner each week. However, I am not a techie and there isn't anything I can do to make sure you don't end up with the same person again - but most of the time, the lords of randomness take care of this.
Q. Do I need a DSLR, expensive equipment or fancy software to play?
A. Nope! If you're partner challenges you to do something that you simply cannot do (don't have the equipment, can't afford it, can't McGiver it), then say so. You know your limits - don't be afraid to speak up. But do remember that the point of "get pushed" is to try something new and I am pretty sure you can adjust the settings on a lot of point and shoot cameras ;p
Q. How do I know what would be a "push" for my partner?
A. Read their profile and look back through the last couple of months of their project (hint for newbies, since you don't have a lot of photos in your project yet, please be sure to post some info about what kinds of photos you like to take in your profile). If it looks like your partner is a seasoned photog who's already done everything, you can always get creative - ask them to tell a story in photographs, take a photo of a scene that reminds them of their favorite book or movie, take one photo and process it in 3 different ways, etc.
Q. What is the schedule?
A. The schedule runs something like this:
Saturday-ish: I will announce the pairings
Monday to Sunday: you take and post your picture(s) for the challenge AND you comment on the picture(s) taken for the challenge by your partner
the following Monday: the person who won previous week's challenge will pick 5 photos from the pool for a vote
Q. Sounds like fun - how do I sign up?
A. Just respond to this thread and I will include you on the list
Q. What if I am going to be away for a week next month - can I still sign up now?
A. Yup! Just be sure to let me know before Friday of the week you will be away so I don't pair you up with anyone.
Q. Who are you and why are you running this challenge?
A. I'm just yer basic 365-er. I inherited the administration of this challenge from another 365-er, Jase Hoad, back in August 2012 when he left the site. The concept originally came from Flickr.
So amazing to see your steadfast commitment to this site. Not going to join this again yet, but hope to soon. (Baby steps.) BTW Is the official weekly theme dormant, or does it happen in a different way now? Ross' last announcement appears to be from April.
@squamloon tx! the weekly challenge is run by Ross ( @scrivna ) and i don't know anything about his plans for it... he did mention in a thread a few days ago that he'd just moved, and was hoping to have more time to devote to 365 again, but not sure if that will include the weekly challenge or not... i miss it too, but can well imagine how much work is involved to keep it going (Ross picks the finalists for voting on each week!)
@northy Thanks for the reply. I've always wondered what would happen if he didn't feel like doing this anymore. If you're reading this, @scrivna, thank you for keeping this going for all these years. We'll never take you for granted.
@northy OK, I'm in my 4th year now and I've always fallen off in my postings at various times. This should help motivate me and get me into areas that I might not otherwise consider. Looking forward to it!
@northy Myra, please count me in. I'd like to contract initially for 4 weeks. Meantime, 'my intimate friend' has pledged to keep me on the straight and narrow. During and/or after 4 weeks of self imposed trauma, I'll take a review and make or break. Thank you in advance.
@lizzitinfish welcome to 365! i have added you to the list to get paired up next week.. meanwhile, if someone else comes along looking for a partner for this week you can pair up with them...
@angiedanielle24 hi Angie! i will add you to the list to get paired up next week... for this week, if someone else comes along looking for a partner you will get paired up with them :)
@30pics4jackiesdiamond Yes I would Jackie. I'm new to this. Looks like besides photography, we have knitting in common. How about something obviously processed. It looks like you typically don't do a lot of that.
@randystreat oooh!! Cruel as I'm only just a novice andt learning!!! Looks like you are a very experienced photographer so how about you add to the project-365 theme? You can use any medium technique but be different from any already uploaded? Will post link on your latest photo. Thank you for starting week early, and thanks @northy
@adrienneb hi Pam... i will add you to the list to get paired up next week... for this week - stay tuned... there's always a chance that someone else will come along looking for a partner :)
@northy
Thank you for all you do to make this work...and make us work too. Am enjoying it more than I expected. A week to do take a shot, albeit with inherent criteria, sounds a breeze. In my experience, far from vast, the days seem to segue past me whilst the end date approaches. Hey ho! Nothing like pressure to make me get my act together.
I'd appreciate it if you could count me out of next (29.04.17) as I'll be attending an annual Knitting Workshop for the entire week. Wef 06.05.17 I'll be back on the grid. Thank you.
@emilysayer hi Emily... i will add you to the list to get paired up next week... for this week, if you wait a day or two i will see about getting you paired up...
@christinabengephotography hi Christina... i just announced this week's groupings, but i'll add you to the list to get paired up for a challenge next weekend...
do i have to attach any particular tag to the image??

That's great, Tx 2 U.
Would you add my name to the pairings when convenient.
Thanks.
thanks.
