Ok, folks, I know I said that I would post the finalists on Monday, but I was able to compile my choices today.
RULES FOR VOTING:
1. Each member of the 365 Project may only vote once! This is to be fair to everyone!
2. You may vote for UP TO THREE images (i.e 1,2,3 or 4,7,10, etc) This is to allow the greatest spread of votes. You may vote for only 1 image if you choose, but no more than 3.
3. Multiple votes for the same image is not allowed.. (i.e. 1,1,1, or 1,2,2, etc.) No stacking of votes! :) If multiple votes are given, only the first vote will be counted. Additional votes will be discarded.
4. All votes must be in by Friday, April 16th, 11:59pm PDT (-8GMT). Good luck!
5. All votes must appear here in this thread as a reply. Simply reply as numbers separated by commas.
1, 8, 10
Thanks for organising the challenge Alex, it was great fun and produced some lovely pics, you must have had a hard job choosing the finalists.
Wow, so far 87 folks have cast their ballots, and the votes go across the board... I am not going to say who is leading because I do not want to influence the voting. If you have not yet voted, please do so by Friday, April 16th, 11:59pm PDT (-8 GMT). Good luck to all the finalists! :)
10, 3, 6, Some of you may not like this, but here goes. I don't think 8 and 9 should be in this contest. Granted, they are interesting photo's. But I think this type of work should be in a category by itself. To me, a true photograph is a image of something captured as it is seen in it's original setting, not something played with and or manipulated. I mean no offense to the ones who did these photo's, they are very talented in their own right, I also know that some photo's have to be edited in some small way, but major changes, make a photograph something else.
.
143 people have voted and 1st and 2nd are still separated by only 6 votes! It's a horse race! :) Who will come out on top?? Stay tuned! Results will be posted Saturday morning!
I find it interesting that we have this forum and challenges, yet there are a LOT of people on here that are completely unaware of it! If you know anyone who is a member and not aware of the forums, please let them know and have them vote! :)
It was an extremely hard decision to choose the finalists. There were two people here helping me make the choices, so it wasn't done lightly. It just so happens that 8 & 9 were artistically put together well as well as technically. I liked the lines that #8 had, and I liked the whimsical nature of #9. True, they were contrived images, but then again there were many that just had a number of objects shot on a table. I liked #3 pegs because of it's shading and composition. I probably could have made different choices, but it was the agreement and consensus of the people here making the choices for finalists that determined which ones made it.
I think we've all learned from this and it was all good fun.
Many of us do not know how to or want to "wash" and "colour" our shots or change the quality of them.
I think a lot of people, like me were looking for the natural photo shot on the day, and I understand where Elo and Richard are coming from.
Hats off to the finalists to be able to use the technical applications applied.
It would have been a hard decision as there were so many great entries.
Great challenge - all good ! :D
Lois, while it is true that many of you do not know how or want to "wash and color" your prints, when you are in a competition, you need every advantage you can get. You will be up against those people who DO use correction software. Their images will be the ones that people notice.
Picasa is a free software that has some very useful correction tools that can easily make your photo look 100% better. I did see many images submitted that looked like they were right out of the camera and totally washed out. It would take only minutes to make your photo more presentable and more noticeable.
For Mac users, a freeware image editor is available with the freely distributable GIMP 2.6, a very full featured software with similar features as Photoshop.
Alex, thank you for sharing the criteria for your selections. I wish you had given that information when you had posted the final pictures.
Prsnl Opin: I would subtract score points (not vote) from Finalist #8 because persons 4 & 5 (from either direction) overlap in the wrong direction, if you look closely.
It is difficult to get a really crisp image when the Washington State Weather gods give you the typical day, gray overcast and mist that is on the verge of rain. I was very wet after getting Day 8.
I dont think there is anything wrong with having 2 finalists featuring teh same subject, and i am not bias having taken the 3 pegs photo.
If you look no 3 features the pegs as the main sbject as well as the sky and colouring. and no 7 uses pags and socks to create an interesting line. Neither are just pictures of pegs.
I think that 8 & 9 show skill not just at editing but in photography as well, there was a lot of preperation and thought that went into them.
No image should be discounted due to the editing or post processing. Even film photographers tint, colour and cross process to add to the effect of the image.
Almost all the pictures were manipulated. The theme was 1 to 10 and I work hard to do the photos. And I don't think fair, take my and number 9 points.. and other of my pic, aren't multiplying.
When I selected the finalists, I did it on the merits of each picture, of what I thought was artistic and technically appealing. What I said early on, is that I wasn't going to base my decision on technical prowess alone (i.e. HDR, multiple exposure, etc)... The photo to me has to be composed artistically as well.... this is the reason why I chose the various photos that I did. I am not the one voting for the winner... you all are. It will stand on that merit and that merit alone. For example Travis did ALL his entries pretty much the same way with him being in multiple places in the same photo, but #9 was the only one that appealed enough to me to make it a choice. It was whimsical and artistic at the same time. Same thing with number 8... I liked the lines and how the picture flowed and the image was composed well. It's a simple as that. This is supposed to be a fun challenge, people... not a world ending decision! So what if you didn't make the finalist round THIS TIME... there will be plenty of other challenges where you can show your best stuff!
163 people have voted and only 9 votes separate the 1st and 2nd place finalists.... if you haven't voted, make sure you do before Saturday morning! Challenge voting ends at 11:59pm PDT (-8GMT) on Friday, April 16th.
It's getting down to the wire, folks.... Only 9 votes separate 1st and 2nd place! If you haven't voted yet, get your vote in by April 16th, 11:59pm PDT (-8GMT).
#6. Creative and well executed. I prefer a picture to a composition but the rules didn't specify one over the other. All are decidedly wonderful in their own right.
We are all winners in our own right, we win by being able to participate in this project, we win by meeting (sort of) other people with like photo passions and being able to share with them. We win by extending ourselves, and looking at many things in a different way than we normally would. We win by learning how other people do things, and different techniques they use. Congrats to all of us.
Hey Richard you are entitled to your opinion but keep it to yourself, if you looked at the votes there is no way 8 and 9 (mine) were going to win anyway so why make a scene? This isn't your competition anyway and boy am I glad. Photography has many faces and even though you may not know how to make such a photo doesn't mean that it isn't photography. Next time make your own competition and you can make the rules how you want, I didn't break any rules and put more thought into one photo then you did into your entire project let alone keeping with my theme from start to finish.
Say what you will about Post Processing but nowadays a little bit of it can make or break a photo. I see Travis' whole 1-10 project as being the most thorough, consistent, and artistic.
Thank you for setting up/ organizing this awesome theme Alex. I also thank you for showing us that you are very level headed and unbiased!
I think there is a difference between killing a photo by over-photoshopping it, and using post processing to subtly enhance a photo. (not talking about cloned ones). just sayin.
2nd Place: #2 - Peter Van Allen - Total votes - 92
3rd Place: #1 - ❀Christina ❀ - Total votes - 68
4th Place: #6 - Joji Aso - Total votes - 63
Congratulations to Tiina for her fabulous image of 10 drops on a flower. She wins a $10 gift card from Amazon.com which has been donated by yours truly.

DISCLAIMER AND LEGALEZE: The prize that I am offering is in no way endorsed by or sponsored by the 365 Project, and it is being offered by me personally for this challenge, and does not indicate that any such prizes shall or may be offered in future challenges.
Thank you Alex for organising this challenge. I really enjoyed taking part in it and the reward of creating photographs that pleased me, and were a little beyond what I usually do, was sufficient for me to feel good about being involved. Congratulations to the winners especially and I hope that we all benefited from the experience. It was clear from the beginning how the challenge would work and no one could fault the way the process was carried out. Your work Alex is appreciated. Thank you.
Thank you, Alex for challenging us! April first was only my 15th day on this project. But giving us this type of structure helped enormously to look closer, see deeper.
Oh my gosh. I never thought I could win this. It's just amazing. I loved to take photos for this challenge as much I enjoyed to watch photos taken by other participants. Thanks everyone who voted here and especially I want to thank you all who gave your vote to me. But as I said all the photos were wonderful. I'm sure Alex had a hard time to choose only ten finalists. For me we all are winners. I will be smiling for a very very long time;)
Thank you Alex and thank you Peter for you nice words.
Congrats to all the finalists/winners, as well as everyone who participated and completed the challenge!
And a big thank you to Alex for organizing this - like so many of the others, I really enjoyed the challenge and definitely found that I put in a little extra thought and effort to get those number photos together.
I also would like to say thank you Alex, for creating and organizing this great challenge. I'm sure you dedicated so much of your time to make this possible.
I never expected to be a finalist, and I got 4th, that's amazing! I had a great time and opportunity to improve my skills. I want congratulate all 365ers which participate with their great works and I would thanks to everyone who gave their votes to my picture. Hugs to all !!!
I thank you as well for the challenge. And I guess I have learned to not post any opinion that I might have because it might hurt or bother someone. Which is not my intent. And congrats to all who won-------
Haha, I posted my opion too but seems you're the one with thin skin and I didn't even exclude you from anything. Sorry my photos offended you and
please feel free to comment on my photos good or bad but remember I'm going to comment back so ask yourself if you can handle that before posting a comment.
Alex, I loved watching this competition as it progressed and all the wonderful shots people came up with. The diversity of ideas was truly amazing.
Congratulations to everyone (but the number 9 finalist) on your awesome photos.
Number 9 - grow up, and get over yourself. Your photos didn't offend anyone, you're attitude did. Your photos are in the top ten but you lack community spirit. You're pretentious and conceited. I had actually thought your photos were okay, but now I've seen your disposition I struggle to think of you as a professional, but rather an indignant child who can't accept anyone else having an opinion that isn't your own.
Thanks for an interesting challenge Alex. It was fun trying to get the right number of items (people eating their lunch must have thought I was completely mad watching me taking photos of seagulls lined up on the fence and waiting till one or two more flew in).
Looking forward to the next challenge. I love the way these challenges push me to explore unknown territory and create a direction/goal for the week.
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks Alex for organising the challenge i realy enjoyed it, and i enjoyed being a finalist. Bring on the next challenge.
Gah people stop ruining such a great challenge by whinging,
I had a wonderful time with this challenge, and it actually made me go on this site more and more.
manipulated images are everywhere.... as soon as you open a file in an editing software...BAM edited...... so just lay off with the preaching will you :)
Thanks for the additional votes, folks, but this challenge has ended... :) Stay tuned for a new challenge starting soon.... the subject will be MACROS... I just have to work out the details as to how to present it... I am going to start another thread soon and we'll discuss the details...
Well you've just cost me some money - I have rushed out and got myself a close up lens (can't afford a proper macro lens yet) ready for this project. What an excuse!!!!
Is there some group like AA perhaps called PA (Photgraphers Anonymous) where we can go to get help when we want to spend all our spare (and not so spare) money on camera accessories?
Well, on another photography site, one of the users coined an acronym called "LBA", for "lens buying addiction"... It is quite common in the photography world... many of the semipro/pro photographers have it bad... :)
Looking forward to more challenges Alex, hope one is soon because I enjoy them so much....that other macro challenge doesn't look well organized I'll be looking out for your challenge!
