I apologize for the double notifications, but I decided to put this topic under Themes and Competitions as this is where the original post was and it just makes more sense to have the thread here. Sorry for the confusion!
This is just a reminder for everyone that July 1st we will begin the Black and White photo challenge for the month of July! Feel free to take black and white photos weekly or daily - the point is simply to improve our black and white photography. Selective color may be used as well, if you wish. Similar to the June gratitude challenge, this thread will serve as a place to post your photos and comment on each others' work.
I am going to give this a try weekly, I think i will try to give up flower pictures as well. Of course I already posted a bright flower for the first...oh well.
First attempt at doing selective coloring. I had tried it with PS and replaced it with this try using picnik.com. I like the PS picture better because it was a richer color and crisper lines but this one using picnik is really easy to use.
Yep I'm a massive B&W addict! The challenge for me won't be so much a challenge to use a B&W image as it will be to 'improve' my B&Ws & maybe pre-think my shot specifically for how it will look in B&W...
This really has me thinking. I just finished a 30 day challenge (it's my June calendar on here) in which there were several days we had to photograph something that was some kind of selfie picture. One of them was "yourself with 13 things." Now, I HATE pictures of myself, so this was a hard one for me to figure out and the actual quality of the picture is not my best, but I was very happy with the composition
Here it is:
Because some of it's hard to see these are the 13 things: my laptop, Nickelback t-shirt, a camera like my very first camera, my Kindle, my iPod, my watch, my wedding ring, my birthstone ring, my Evo, LOST DVDs, a stuffed Scottie dog, Bud Ice and Diet Dr. Pepper. And, of course my lap top contains a pic of me that I like... so there's the me part. But, everything included in the picture says something about me.
a SC BnW....i have more just Bnw im going to be doing later in the monthmy gdaughters dress...she wanted to capture the light flash, and i had to take 14 pics to get the right settings....LOL
well i have not been overly good at the whole every photo being black and white - since it is day three and this is my first black and white - but i think I will do more of a focus towards as opposed to a strict following.... anyway my first b&w for the month of July...
@pamelaf You still upload the photos to your project, but in the tags box, put the tag julybw. This will enable others to see your photos along with the others for the challenge when they search for that tag.
Also, if you wish to post your photos in this thread for everyone to see, you can go to the SHARE box on your photo's page, copy the link, and paste it here.
i have corel paint shop pro- im only just starting to figure out how to use parts.
i white balanced it in colour- put it through B&W filter then created a new layer of just the flower cut out from the colour version- i upped the colour and brightness on the flower and merged the layers (just make sure the section is in the right place :) ).
Its my first shot at selective colour so am glad it worked.
just been taught an easier way of selecting the item for colour
With the magic wand tool in corel. Photoshop has one too. Also, there is a program on Photobucket called Colorsplash that allows you to do the same thing but it is a little more time consuming.
Tamalyn Estrin @mjkthorpe - Select the tool (duh :P), then click on the section you want. It will surround the section with a blinking line. If it did not select everything you wanted the first time, hold down "shift" and click again. Keep holding "shift" and clicking at all of the spots you want (it might take a couple of times depending on the photo) until you have selected everything. Then I click on the arrow tool and the items I selected with the wand become a promoted section. I then click on the background layer and change it to B&W with the photo effects tool. Does that make sense?
@june - As I told @mjkthorpe, you can use the photobucket effect "colorsplash" to do selective color if you dont have one of the photo editing programs. Its a little more time consuming to use (you are pretty much erasing the black and white to show the color in a sub layer) but it is a good place to start.
Sorry i forgot to post this one,, its a British army soldier the day before he goes back to Afghan for his final part of the tour holding his 4 year old twins.
Just think its a lovely picture and moment of them together
There are several threads for the challenge now, it's a bit confusing.
Anyway, there are so many good B&W and selective coloring pics! :-)
Here was mine for yesterday:

@judithdeacon beautiful landscape, and well-suited for black and white. I can almost imagine the colors
@1invisiblegrl I love the details of the flower, especially the water droplets

This is mine. It's a rock, I really liked the shape and how the light was coming through the trees and hitting its surface.
You've heard of SOOC, well, this one's SOOC and SOOS (straight out of the sink).

Here's what I have so far:
New to this- how do you submit a photo to a theme, as opposed to uploading to my project?
Is there a FAQ?
selective black and white and also for theme challange
First time I've ever played around with black and white! Comments and advice would be extremely welcome. :)
