If you don't use the Google Chrome desktop web browser, unfortunately you are not able to use this.
Are you constantly checking the 365project.org site to see if you have new notifications? Then this extension is for you!
This extension adds a button to the right of your web browser's address bar. When it's green, you don't have any new notifications. When it turns red, you have a new notification! You don't need to be on the 365project page or even have 365project open in your browser for this to work!
If you click on the button, you will see your latest notifications:
You can then click on a notification to open the 365project site at that page.
It will also display a brief alert in the bottom-right of the screen, as well as playing a notification sound (both of these features can be disabled):
If you'd like to try it out, you can get it by going to the following site in Google Chrome:
And clicking on the '+ Free' button to install it.
Things to note:
1. At no point does this extension know your password (or username, for that matter).
2. This is a side-project, which means it's been put together in a couple of hours of free time I had, and so far been tested on one machine (mine!). It may not work for you straight away, but if you let me know what's wrong, I'll try and fix it! Edit: It appears that it is working well for other users.
3. It may especially not work for Ace accounts (as I don't have an Ace account, I can't test it). Edit: It's now been tested on numerous Ace accounts with good results.
4. If it doesn't work or you don't like it, it's super-easy to remove (just right-click on the button it's added, and choose 'Remove from Chrome').
@Scrivna: I used some modified versions of the 365project.org logo in parts of this extension. As always, I've tried to make it extremely clear that this extension is not in any way endorsed or supported by the site. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns.
@squamloon@cazann@therubysusan Awesome, let me know if you spot any problems or can't figure anything out! This is my first Chrome extension so I'm still learning!
How cool! I used to use Chrome but it was too slow on some sites so I switched to Firefox :(
I'd switch back for that extension but since I used FF for about a year all my bookmarks and stuff are here :I
@abirkill You are the most amazingly clever chap, Alexis...I've just done the simplest installation ever and am now listening out...! Love the messages you got up top too... :)
Thank you
@justaspark@abirkill Jule, converting an extension from Chrome to Firefox usually involves simply replacing the SDK since Firefox is extremely flexible. I tagged Alexis since he may not have seen your question.
I've downloaded it (it was so easy and intuitive!) and now I'm watching and waiting and hoping it will turn red soooooon! :) Anyone want to tag me so I can hear the sound and watch my logo turn red?
@abirkill@kannafoot -- It worked! It made a surprisingly loud sound but best of all, the little logo turned RED just like you said it would, Alexis! I'm an Ace member so it works for Ace, too! Thanks, Ron, for tagging me so it would trigger the alert!
@abirkill Computer has been off so didn't hear the sound, but the little red three was glowing red when I came online and it worked a dream (I'm an Ace member). Ohmygosh a pop-up just slid into the corner of the screen too... how exciting! :) Thank you & well done
Awesome! Glad it seems to be working for, well, everyone as far as I can see! (Wow!)
As this thread will shortly disappear off the front page never to be seen again, if you see anyone commenting how something like this would be useful, can I ask you to point them towards it?
@peterdegraaff Don't you follow those posters? You really should! ;)
@justaspark@kannafoot It's a bit more complex than that -- the graphics resources would need resizing and various other tweaks as well. It's certainly possible to re-use much of the code, but it would require another development and testing cycle. And from an admittedly-selfish point of view, if I'm doing unpaid software development I like it to be on something that I benefit from :)
However, if there's a strong demand for it, I might be persuaded to investigate converting it.
@abirkill This is cool! I'm "migrating" over to Chrome from Internet Explorer since iGoogle went away, so I'm not on it exclusively, but popping it up to check what's going on in 365 is a lot quicker than plowing through my e-mail! And I posted a link to the butterfly alphabet that people have enjoyed, so I actually have notifications right now!
@abirkill alexis slightly off topic but do you know of any reason why chrome on my iPad will not allow me to log in? I can see 365 but only the public bits. It's a pain as safari keeps losing my login even though I have ticked remember passwords and so have to re-enter every time so looking for another solution Steve

Now if only I had time to get back into 365 to the point that I have notifications again! :^)

Anyone know how to program a Firefox addon?
Most excellent.
Beep—productively procrastinate now! And how cool that the notifications are right there in the browser, profile pics and all. Well done.
Thank you
