Motivation!

March 17th, 2011
Hello everyone!

I'm fairly new to 365 proj (about 40 in), and absolutely loving it so far! However, recently it seems that life has just gotten in the way of my photography goals. What with work and final exams at school, it's hard to find the time to shoot a picture that I really love. It seems that I am either staring at my books all day inside, and thus not feeling aaaaaaannyyy inspiration, or defaulting to taking some sort of self-portrait, since I'm the only thing I'm really around all day. Sad. :(

I don't want to give up now, but I'm struggling to keep up with my commitment to 365!

Does anybody have any tips for keeping motivated/ finding that special time to take your photo everyday?
Has this ever happened to anyone else? How did you pull yourself out of it?
How can I motivate myself or help myself continue to contribute to my 365?

Thanks for the support, everyone, I'm sure it's something we have all struggled with at one time or another, and I really just need that extra boost to help myself stick with it!

I don't have much time to take photos either, maximum an hour a day before I go home. I have considered stopping the project also, because I spend too much time thinking about photography. Anyway, I have an iPhone on me so I sometimes take emergency photos for the day. I am committed to 3 albums tho and all pics have to be taken on that day.

Hey Loni,

As someone who is only about a week ahead of you. I've had this feeling. I really just take photos of anything and everything. Take a little look at my photos. You'll see I really do have a mixed bag =) All I can suggest is stick with it and look at things you've never really looked before as a possible subject. You might surprise yourself at what you find and how well it turns out.

I also noticed you are only following 13 people. Maybe add to that list a little and source inspiration from your fellow 365ers. I know I have found a few ideas from some of the people I follow

I've started following you, I want to see how this turns out =)

Thanks so much guys! Great ideas.. I will definitely start following more people and remember that a photo a day is a photo a day-- even if it's taken with my iphone :)

My whole project so far has been entirely taken on my iPhone. I hope it stays that way =)

@loni526 I don't have a special time to take my photograph every day, nor do I have any preconceived idea of what I will take, but I have never yet had a photo-less day because I always have a little point-and-shoot camera in my pocket, whether out shopping, walking, travelling by bus or train, or just at home doing the chores, and whenever I see something that takes my fancy or makes me want to write a few words about it, I 'snap' it ... and that happens several times most days.

The only rule I set myself is to photograph only things which are actually there, and have a reason to be photographed, not set up just to make a picture, and with the basic shot in the bag I can do what I like with it afterwards by way of processing.

Good luck!

Hey Loni
HANG in THERE. I love the original concept of 365, however I'll admit it's not actually convenient for me. Life too, gets in the way. I've finally compromised. When I get the opportunity, I spend quality time photographing. I take my time, practice, fiddle with settings, lighting and am learning f-stops & apertures. I stop and photograph things I'd like to print and display in my home or to tuck into a scrapbook and journal around.
The result may be one day, 100 photo's. I'll use those for several days and then go out and find something else..do the same. I DO drag my camera with me everywhere I go and when I can't drag it in with me..I rely on my iphone.
Photograph what's important to you. If you like studio shots, do studio shots, if you like artistic water/bubble shots do it, if you like landscapes... you get the point. Shot what you love.
Hang in there sista!!

Hi everyone! I'm just new here and have just uploaded photos today. I have been eyeing 365 project for a few weeks now and I wasn a bit hesitant to join because I don't know if i can commit to it. I have 3 lil youngins that take most, if not all, of my day, which is why most of my photos are of them. Hopefully I can get out there and take photos of other things :)

It's awe-inspiring to see all the great photos people take!

@nicolelouise83 - You can make it work for you in the way that is convenient. Feeling the pressure of having to shoot one a day quickly wore on me, even though there are days that I shoot dozens of images! But sometimes, just sometimes, I have off days and can't make a shot. SO, I changed the rules for myself, to enable success in keeping with the project:

Like @wordpixman, I photograph only actual things that have a reason to be photographed- doing absolutely no set up or posing just to make a picture. Becasue I have days of many shots, and then days of absolutely no usable shots, I allow myself to go back and process/edit some of my overflow and post the processed photos for that particular day, if needed.

In this sense, I always have a backlog of images to choose for the slow days when I can't make a new shot - and editing on my iPhone (I'm only using my iPhone, which is also convenient) can be done while I sit in bed or lounge on the couch relaxing : )

Don't be hard on yourself - just make it work how you must! But above all, do NOT abandon the project - and that goes for you, too, @viranod!!!

@jesase I'll echo all of that: Being tied to a date, and possibly feeling that the sense of urgency justifies 'making' a picture and posting in haste, meets only one of the objectives of the project, but I too find it just as easy and enjoyable to take a picture every day and post one every day, though not necessarily the same day, without sacrificing the ability to think about and enhance my photographs.

It is a great project if entered into in the spirit of learning and enjoying, and should not be seen as a chore, or imposing time limits which a number of people have admitted they find stressful. That is not why we are here, and although I have been taking photographs longer than most people here have been alive, I have a strong feeling that my work has improved immeasurably since joining just a month ago.

Keep clicking, and enjoying!

Hi! I haven't read the above responses, so my apologies if I'm redundant. When I get bummed or during crunch time, I find something in the day that makes me happy and shoot that. It really works and keeps me going. Seriously, one day I took a picture of a box of coffee. Terrible subject, but it documented the day and kept me going. Good luck!
