This morning we finished packing and headed for our next stop in Zadar. This is one of our longest drives and I had planned that we break the journey at the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Colin took the first leg of driving which was quite intimidating driving out of Zagreb, traffic lights will be green for a right turn… simultaneously as the green man appears on the pedestrian crossing - figure that one out.
Eventually we got onto the motorway and then the smaller roads. The countryside is beautiful and the villages tiny. We stopped briefly for a comfort break at Karan next to the river that flows into the Plitvice Lakes. Eventually we reached the first gate of the National Park and parked about a twenty minute walk away as it was packed. This was the theme for the rest of the day… queuing for tickets, queuing for entrance and then queuing for over 1.5 hours for the boat across the lake. The views were indeed impressive and the first fall, named appropriately ‘Veliki Slap’ translated as Large Waterfall - very impressive. There were a lot of people but with the power of photography it appears we were the only people there.
The longest queue was for the boat that crosses the lake to the second entrance - 1.5 hours later and a lot of moans, groans and cross words and eventually we managed to got on one of the boats. It was lovely and cool on the lake and the boat stopped on a small island where we had to transfer to a smaller boat but we took time to wander along the wooden walkways suspended just above the rushing waters of the smaller falls.
It seemed a long day, probably because of the queuing but it was my turn to drive on the final stretch to Zadar which magically increased from the expected duration to nearly two hours. It was not too bad a drive although we saw some pretty bad accidents along the way. We had a little difficulty in locating our next apartment but after a phone call Robert stood in the road and Colin found him whilst I turned the car around and parked up.
Another nice, well equipped apartment and a lot quieter with the windows open than the last one although that was a lovely place. We walked to the InterSpar hypermarket and stocked up with a hot chicken and other bits and bobs. We were pretty shattered and went to bed early.
@busylady@monicac thank you - it really was beautiful but very busy when we arrived. As we are at the start of the holiday season and it was a Friday, goodness knows what it would be like on a weekend in August! I think it was really well designed with all the walkways - so cool with the waterfall spray as well.
