Heptonstall is a small settlement above the town of Hebden Bridge. We walked up 'the Buttress' which according to the BBC website "is not for the faint-hearted".
The name Heptonstall probably comes from the Anglo-Saxon meaning High Town, although it is better described today as a small village.
The village was once a centre for hand-loom weaving. The cottage windows, designed to let maximum light in, are a reminder of the days when weavers worked at home. Heptonstall had a cloth hall at which the finished work was traded before Halifax had its Piece Hall, and it's still there today! The old Grammar School, by the churchyard, also testifies to the village's illustrious past.
Heptonstall declined with the industrial revolution and Hebden Bridge in the valley below, gained in prominence.
Narrow flagged lanes lead off the main street, like Church Lane shown in this shot.
I wasn't able to access your wife's college (you left the link on my barrels post). When I click on the link I get a message the page cannot be accessed. I would love to see the painted elephants too. That would be a fun sight.
Thank you for your positive comments. Heptonstall and the area has always been a favourite place to visit and discover. I like the hills and lovely stone buildings as you can see. Katharine
Sorry Sandy, I hadn't left a space after the end of the link. It should have been http://365project.org/fishers/365/2016-06-01 - I hope that this one works!
