York Minster - without visitors by fishers

York Minster - without visitors

Another unusual shot from my walk around York city centre. Usually this pedestrianised area to the south of York Minster is thronged with visitors, but again the scene is transformed by the absence of people.

Bruni ( @bruni) queried our lockdown. The UK lockdown is less strict than that of some other countries. Unlike others, we are allowed out for exercise for an hour a day, as long as we keep at least 2 metres from other people. This makes it an excellent time to take photos of the city centre during my daily walk. During this walk, the city centre streets were much quieter than streets around where I live.

The site of the Minster is of great historical interest. In Roman times, almost 2000 years ago, the site was occupied by the Roman headquarters building, some remains of which are still visible in the Minster undercroft. In 627AD the first wooden church was built. Work on the current Minster first began in 1220 and was completed over 250 years later, in 1472. There have been many changes since then, and there is a continual programme of restoration, with recent major projects including cleaning and restoring the old stained glass.

Super wide angle shot. It’s quite odd, isn’t it, so silent and peaceful.

Great shot of this beautiful building. But what is a building without visitors? The use of it is it`s reason of being. Fav. capture.

One good thing about this situation is being able to get good shots without people in the way. Great shot.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

I've noted your comments on the absence of people, but this series, and other shots I've taken during the lockdown, will be a future reminder of recent events. After all, I have lots of other shots of York with crowds!

@ninaganci

Thank you Nina - York has some 2000 years of history, all mixed and jumbled together. I really enjoy trying to untangle, understand and enjoy it!

Thank you Lizzy. We live in very strange times and it is interesting to see our city while it is so quiet!
