Katharine and I had a walk into York city centre yesterday. Part of my plan was to take photos in and around St Martin le Grand church in Coney Street in the heart of the city, but sadly it was closed and locked. However, I spotted this stone carving of the face of a king beside the right side of the south door.
Sadly, I have no further information about who it might represent, but perhaps I will discover more when I am able to get into the church. However, that will have to wait for another day.
The church has a long history, and may well be one of the oldest churches in the city. It had a particularly traumatic time in 1942 when it was seriously damaged during a bombing raid. It was eventually rebuilt using only part of the original building and creating an outdoor space with the rest. It is an interesting mix of old and new. I will share more of that when I get chance to go into the church.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I like the suggestion from @vignouse that with the hole in the eye, it could be King Harold! The church is currently closed to visitors due to Covid-19, but when it reopens I will see if I can find any information in the church about who this is. I haven't been able to discover anything about him online.

Thank you Vesna. The light was at just the right angle when I got there.
