York is well known for it's historical buildings, but there are a few interesting modern buildings as well. This mirror finished building is a new building for Hiscox, the insurance company, and it was opened in 2015. It is in an area of considerable redevelopment known as Hungate.
It has been the subject of controversy, since it is located next to, and towers over, the Black Swan Inn, which dates back to the 15th century. I can understand that argument, but I think the building itself, reflecting a mixed range of old and modern buildings works quite well.
An unusual feature not visible here is that there is a decommissioned Soviet rocket inside the building. I would love to go inside and have a look!
Beautiful shot. It is worrying to me to see new buildings slowing pushing out the old heritage of the area. A new building will encourage others and others to take over and gradually one has lost one's identity. This has happened here and could happen anywhere.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
This is probably one of the more successful new buildings created in York in recent times. The Hungate area around this building had become very run down and neglected, and was much in need of redevelopment.
The Black Swan was a very popular pub for St Johns students throughout the 1970s. I don't know if it still is, but the growth of student accommodation close to it might suggest that it might well be!

Thank you Vesna. I like the way that a mirrored building like this reflects the old buildings nearby.
