We had an interesting tour round the buildings then, and learned more of their history. The school was opened in 1932 as a combined Infant and Junior School at a time of new housing developments in the area. Continued housing development led to the construction of a new Infants School nearby, and this school was just for Junior age pupils. It closed in 2011, but shortly after that, for a period of 5 years the Secondary School next door used the site.
Both our daughters spent four years of their education there, in what was a very happy school. For a while Katharine was a school governor there as well.
Now one wing of the building has been demolished. The remaining building in this shot (which was thw school hall) is being retained as part of the new development of the site as a replacement for the current local library, which will then also be demolished. The area where the heap of rubble is will have a new two storey building constructed linked to the hall building, in a style to complement the hall.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and fav, they are very much appreciated.
By coincidence, on Thursday I caught the bus back home from the city centre and one of my fellow passengers was the man who had been headmaster when our younger daughter was a pupil at this school, and we had an interesting chat. We were both pleased that at least some of the school would be incorporated in the new building, and that it would provide much needed improved local facilities.
The library close to where we live is moving into the new building, and other areas of the new building will be available for community groups.
I'm looking forward to seeing the scheme completed - I hope to be there to record it with my camera!
