Arguably Britains most scenic stretch of the motorway, this is the road between Junctions 36 & 38 of the M6. I took this sneaky shot on my way to Hexham yesterday. In front of me are The Howgill Fells which are my favourites...I think they look like big soft pillows & are particularly lovely when they are covered in snow. This is always a quiet stretch of motorway as it travels towards Shap Fell & sometimes you are almost dive bombed by fighter jets as they practice their manoeuvres from Wharton BAE.
I stopped at Tebay which is the only independent motorway service station & a real treasure !!! Fantastic view, food, a wonderful local farm shop which sells Westmoreland goodies & another area which sells clothes, toys, books etc !!! I'm sure there were people there just on a day out especially to visit Tebay!
Anyway to cut a long story short ... I am rambling on a bit, there was fog up ahead & I was already nervous about coming back in the dark with frost & fog, I decided my auntie wouldn't want me to take the risk so I turned round!
We were held up by an overturned caravan for ages on the way home but was back eating my tea in front of Strictly by the time I would have been setting off for a 120 mile journey home !
I can't believe this is a British scene with that tropical pure blue sky! You're a wise woman to trust your instincts and to turn round!! - that blue sky proably meant icy roads later on.
@jmj Yes I think I was right as it was -1 later & my car is no good in ice, rear wheel drive , so I think I did right although I was wanting to take photos of Hexham Abbey so a bit disappointed about that !
This sits on my 365dashboard just above a photo by @richardshears taken in Queensland and the skies in both are just amazing!! I wish we had some hills to look at - sigh. The road's a bit busy though Pat ;0)
stunning shot Pat. I love this part of the Lakes...for me the sight of the hills at this stretch always makes me feel like I'm coming to my second home (I've spent many fond days in the Lakes over time). Great Blues and love Tebay too (had many a stop off there!) glad you took the safe and steady option home!
You're making me feel homesick. I love this stretch of the M6 - it means being amongst my beloved Lakeland fells soon and wondering looking forward to a walk and a pint or two. The black pudding Scotch eggs from the farm shop at Tebay services are none too shabby either.
Thanks for the info Pat - interesting stretch of road. I'm glad you turned back too. I hate driving in the fog and the dark - not a good combination at all.
I agree, a beautiful stretch of motorway, these fells are beautiful, I have seen them look like this but more often its raining or grey! Glad you kept safe.
Love this view - I was heading up the M6 to Scotland for work yesterday (as I regularly do); I always find myself humming 'Hills of the north rejoice' driving through the Howgills!
