We forgot the chimney sweep was coming this morning so had to rush around moving stuff.
Chimney sweeping has come on so much over the last few hundred years.
Thank goodness we don't send young boys up the chimneys these days.
Today it's a very quick job with no soot mess at all.
We still get the thrill of seeing the brush stick out of the top of the chimney though!
Seventeen years on & sad not to hear any mention of 9/11 on our news today. We should never forget!
Three good things:
1. I walked my full 10,000 steps today.
2. My new glasses are ready to pick up tomorrow!
3. We managed to get the bathroom wall replastered & damp proofed next door while our tenants are away on holiday...think they will be pleased when they come back tonight to see it all finished.
very very cool. Funny how we people forget things so easily...all bad stuff should be kept alive to try not to make it happen again...look at the world leaders we have...history can repeat itself and it can happen overnight.
I'd forgotten about the date too! I think over there they are worrying about Florence more now! Your chimney must be nice and strong - perhaps not the original!
All ready for the first fire..been quite alot on our news re 9/11 .. The Firemen did the run up the Sky tower again in memory of the firefighters that lost their lives and also Firefighters that have lost their lives in the course of duty ..
Nice timing Pat to get it nice and clean before the winter . Being in a smoke free zone we don't see many sweeps these days . I remember as a child my dad being in the building trade and a tidy worker did our chimneys , while others had the chimney sweep in !! My knees are so painful Pat (day and night - I don't think its the replacement knee parts ,but the arthritis causing spurs around the new joints as is happening in my shoulder ! but We will have to wait for the Xray results before we know !
David cleans our chimney at the end of winter, but it is still in use at the moment. We are still lighting the wood burner at night. We are very soft in Australia. ha ha.
@julzmaioro Yes I saw a clip of the firefighters run up the tower, William didn't do it this year I don't think. Never heard one reference to it today on the news!! 😰
@beryl Oh dear so sorry about your knees. You would be really hoping it would be all plain sailing from your op onwards. It must be painful too! Let's hope for a clear & treatable result Beryl.
@onewing Well why not, we have to keep warm & even if it's warm in the daytime there can be a chill in the evening. We won't be lighting ours just yet as the woodburner is so hot it gets too warm if it's not cold enough. We sit by the Aga which is the nicest place with the comfiest of chairs & no fire to clean ....win win all round! The woodburner is fantastic when it gets proper cold!
@busylady Thanks Judith. I myself alone cleared the whole of the rubble out of that inglenook. Barrow loads of stone & stuff & then on top of that I used a stone tool to clean the whole thing. My arms were trembling with the effort & juddering of the tool. We were milking at the time so if I wanted doing I did it myself but I am very proud of that fireplace!
Lovely image of this man at work! We're going to be fitting a wood burning stove in November. I wasn't sure about it, but hubby's convinced me. I hope I don't regret it!
I loved this post. My mum says the same about chimney sweep though she rarely uses the fire any longer as my brother created a 'chimney windbreak to keep the draught out and it's very effective.
I was surprised at 9/11 not featuring much too. It was such a shocking event at every level.
Did you run outside and turn around three times / curtsey? Am I getting muddled up I wonder? Love the shot of the man at work, traditional work and I'm glad there are still folk to do it.

A sweep is as lucky as lucky can be
