Clifford's Tower by if1

Clifford's Tower

086 - Clifford's Tower is the motte of a motte and bailey castle, and is all that remains of that castle.

The original motte and bailey castle on this site was erected on the instructions of William the Conqueror. The present tower was built between 1245 and 1262 by order of King Henry 111. It was encircled by a moat fed from the River Foss. By 1800, the moat was no longer in existence. The tower was taken within the confines of the new York County Prison which was built in 1826 and demolished in 1935. The tower is now in the care of English Heritage.

Today Clifford's Tower is a significant stop on the York tourist trail, and in this shot, yet another school party climbs the steps to have a look round,
This is a great shot of this familiar sight which I don't think I've ever taken a photo of so I'll fav it!

Wow That is quite a substantial structure. We have a few of these motte and bailey structures around our area but nothing as well preserved as this.

Good job,Ian, must admit I failed miserable to get a decent shot of this great landmark.

@sarah19

Thank you Sarah. We have quite a few castles in Yorkshire, many of them with much more to see than at this one. I'm seriously considering a years membership of English Heritage and then doing a more systematic tour with my camera, but that will probably have to wait until next summer when I should have a bit more time.

@collin

Thank you - this wasn't the shot I went for, but when I got there and saw a school party about to climb the steps, a distant shot with the zoom and a crocodile of children somehow seemed more appropriate than my other ideas

Good shot. The school party make it for me.

this is beautiful in so many levels for me. It brings Yorkshire, a place I called home for 10 years, back to me; and especially York which in lovely summer's day cannot get more perfect. It also captures history and how it is passed on to the new generations. Beautiful, and a Fave for me!

@bkbinthecity

Thank you - York has layers upon layers of history, but because it's around you all the time it is easy to stop noticing - but 365 has made me refocus, and I hope that I can convey something of the city's beauty and history in the pictures that I post.

Wowie wow! How old the motte is and it looks very imposing! I am glad it's being maintained so people can still see and learn from it. I like the group walking up the stairs, too because they give me an idea of just how big the hill and the motte are! I am so glad I got to see and learn from this picture! Just --- wow! And congratulations on the pops page, too!

When the people get to the top, will they be able to go through the gate? There must be a beautiful view from the top of the stairs too.

@kchuk

Thank you very much, glad you like it! Clifford's Tower is open for visitors prepared to pay the admission fee (£4 per adult). There is a walkway around the top of the wall which gives some interesting views over the city.
