National Railway Museum by if1

National Railway Museum

087 - York has played host to the National Railway Museum since it's creation in 1975. Originally housed in what had been a steam motive power depot, the museum has grown considerably since then, with the acquisition of further land and buildings.

Next week it plays host to Railfest 2012, with visiting historic and modern rail vehicles, as well as the museums own collection, and when some 65,000 visitors are expected. The display will extend into neighbouring railway property, and cover an area equivalent to 11 football pitches. I thought it worth an early visit, since the process of moving vehicles around has started, and I thought there might be different views of vehicles to take.

I was disappointed in that hope, but I liked this view of the former goods depot, now known as the Station Hall, where trains of varied stock are made up and stand in the platforms.
Ooooh! I LOVE trains. This is great. Lovely composition. =)

Glad you like it! - it was a bit of a disappointing visit today, since quite a lot of the museum was closed - parts being prepared for Railfest2012 which starts on Saturday, and part so that tables and chairs could be put out for a large annual dinner - fascinating place to sit and eat!

That would be such a fasinating museum to visit. The event coming up would be wonderful to be able to take in and see so many interesting and I am sure unique pieces of railway history

I think Railfest2012 will be the biggest UK rail event for a long time. It's 8 years since the last Railfest, and that was a huge success. I'm just surprised that it's taken so long to repeat. All being well there will be photos of this years event on here sometime next week.

@marieooi

Thank you Marie! The locomotive from the Harry Potter films was outside the museum a few days ago, so should be on display at Railfest2012 - and there is a platform 9 3/4 sign in the museum, so if you hear of anyone dissapearing in York, you can guess where they might have ended up!

Thank you Lisa - is hubby coming to York for Railfest this week? There was a locomotive naming yesterday of an East Coast electric train, along with a flypast by the Battle of Britain memorial flight. Sadly, it's a bit expensive to go every day, but I expect to visit sometime mid week - and with the flypast I could just be in the area to capture it!
