088 - I've posted quite a lot of photos of the old historic buildings in York, but here is a more modern building. It holds a unique place in the minds of the people of York, many of who seem to loath it.
Little information about it's history exists online. It was built in the 1960s, and is a stark contrast to the many older buildings in the city centre.
Every time a new development is proposed in the city centre, the cry of 'oh no, we don't want another Stonebow' can be heard. There has recently been an online petition to get it demolished!
Personally, I'm happy to see it stay. It's no worse than many buildings in many towns and cities in the UK. Perhaps it's importance is that it does make developers and the city planning authorities look more carefully at proposed new developments, and more recent buildings are better designs as a result.
I'm not sure what to think! The building looks lovely having been cleaned up on the outside which the university could never have funded, but as that was where my graduation ceremony was held it seems a pity that it has had to change its role!
Ah well!
Sadly, change seems to be the norm now. Our own council is spending £42million on renovating York's original station building and adding extensions, in the interests of efficiency and to save £17million over the next 25 years. Spending £42million to save £17million? not sure if its their maths or mine where the problem is!
At GREAT cost they have now moved into the former historic university buildings - Marischal College! http://www.flickr.com/photos/49158943@N04/6473121375/

Thank you - I thought it would be a change after all the history that I've shared recently!
You could be right - a simular building that I saw on my travels recently has had coloured panels added and looks much better.
