147 - Walmgate Bar was one of four major entrances to the medieval walled city of York, and is the only one to remain largely in it's early form, with a prominent barbican protruding from the main gate. It lies in the south-east part of the city walls, close to a route first known to have been used by the Romans (although it was well outside the Roman walled city).
Most of Walmgate Bar was built during the 14th century, although the inner gateway dates from the 12th century. As well as it's barbican it also retains its portcullis and 15th century oak doors. On the inner side (not visible here), an Elizabethan house, supported by stone pillars, extends out over the gateway.
Until recently it still served as a road into the city, with a new arch broken into the wall for traffic leaving the city. Following a number of incidents of damage caused by traffic, it was closed to motor traffic and is now only used by cyclists entering the city
Thank you - but I did cheat a bit! - I'm stood on the traffic island in the middle of the road so I only have to watch out for traffic from one direction, and simply waited for the lights to be against it!
Thank you Bruni - it is a large impressive building. At the other side of the building, there is a coffee shop built into it, but I'll save the surprise of what it looks like until our circuit of the walls is complete!

Thank you Roslyn, you are quite right, I am spoilt for choice - but this project has made me look at them again in more detail, which is a good thing!
Thank you Brian - not only is it still standing, but part of the back of this was used until very recently as a coffee shop!
Thank you Tin, glad you like it!
Thank you Deb, glad you like it! - and to get this angle I was stood on a traffic island in the middle of a very busy road!
Thank you Bob, glad you like the walls, because there is another shot of them today!
Thank you Marie - the other side is obscured by a load of modern street signs!
