148 - Much of York's medieval city walls were opened for people to walk round during Victorian times, well over a century ago. The medieval wall walk was widened, and in more recent times metal fences have been placed along parts of the wall walk to prevent people falling off.
The total circuit is about 2.5 miles, and it is a pleasant walk, although there are a lot of steps to climb up and down. Along the route, embedded in the flagstones on which you walk are markers to point out place of interest.
This section of wall is north of Walmgate Bar, looking south towards the Bar, which is hidden by the trees
