151 - A rather dull day for the continuation of the York city wall walk, and not a wall in sight! North east of the Red Tower in yesterday's shot is an area known as the Kings Pool, created by damming the River Foss.
Later the area became known as Foss Islands, which was an impassable swamp created as the Kings Pool silted up. Whether pond or marsh, no wall was needed for defence here.
In 1854, the area was drained and the River Foss constrained to a single channel. After this the area became highly industrialised. Over the last 40 years there has been a reduction in industry, and quite recently a retail park has developed.
Thank you Bob - fortunately I was on a bridge! The river is very slow moving, and in dry spells pretty stagnant (not that we've had one of those this year!)
Thank you all for your comments. I'm stood on a modern low bridge over the river, which replaced a far more attractive hump back bridge. The new bridge is meant to help the traffic floe
