City Walls along Jewbury by if1

City Walls along Jewbury

152 - North west of Foss Islands the stone walls begin again, running in a north westerly direction. The entrance to the wall walk here is very different from the original structure, which took the form of a tower.

The walls themselves are built of Magnesian Limestone, brought from quarries some 10 miles west of York, probably by barge, sailing down the River Wharfe before joining the River Ouse and sailing upstream to York.
Great info. Beautiful collage of the Great City Walls! Nice.
