242 - For several years York has held an 'Illuminating York' programme, with impressive lighting displays on different buildings each year. For the past three years the Railway Museum has joined in by holding a competition.
Teams use white and coloured lighting effects and smoke generators on a selection of locomotives and coaches. This year nine teams took part, and the results of their efforts were on public display this evening. Here, locomotive 45305 is on the turntable. This locomotive has appeared before in my project - http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-09-19 and http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-08-30.
This is the first time I've used my current camera for night photos, and I was disappointed with many of the results. I've learnt a lot though, and hopefully I will be able to put the lessons into practice tomorrow evening, when the illuminated locomotives are on display again.
Looks really good. Did you use a tripod? If you want crisp dof throughout then use a small aperture like f/22 or whatever your camera is capable of + a long shutter. The results should produce star like flares near the light sources- sorry hard to explain.
Thank you Brian, and thank you for the advice! Unfortunately the bridge camera I use isn't ideal for this kind of shot. Maximum exposure is 2 seconds, smallest aperture f6.3 so a long way from what is really needed. I had a good look at the manual today, and found one of the night settings which should give a better result - see http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-11-03 for the result.
Thank you Bill - it is an excellent museum, with two massive halls and a large outdoor display area so lots to see. I go there about every 3 - 4 weeks because there are regular changes to what is on display.
Great capture . Thank you for you kind wishes
Thank you Alison, glad you like it.
