251 - In the UK the 11th November is our Remembrance Day, commemorating members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
The date recalls the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month," in accordance with the Armistice, signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning.
This collage includes four War Memorials within half a mile of each other, in the centre of York.
The first image is the memorial in gardens on Leeman Road. Open in 1925, this is the city's principal memorial and hosts the annual Service of Remembrance in the presence of the Lord Mayor and other Civic dignitaries.
The second image is a memorial set just inside the city walls, not far from the railway station, and commemorates the employees of the North Eastern Railway who gave their lives in the Great War (World War 1)
The third image is the memorial to the 2nd Division (Kohima memorial) and is in Deans Park, behind the Minster. The wall in which it is set is a remnant of the old Archbishops Palace.
The fourth image is the Boer War memorial in Duncombe Place, commemorating those who died in the South African war of 1899 - 1902.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Nice collage for Remembrance Day in the UK. Veteran's Day is celebrated the same date in the US. It used to be called Memorial Day, but was changed several years ago to Veteran's Day.
