252 - Barley Hall is another example of York's hidden history. Coffee Yard is where it can be found, and access is from one of two narrow alleys.
The shot on the left is the access from Stonegate, one of the busiest tourist streets in York. The top left corner of this alley is marked by a small red devil - see http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-03-21.
Anyone who passes along either of these narrow alleys will find Barley Hall - a reconstructed medieval townhouse and shown in the central shot. It was originally built around 1360 by the monks of Nostell Priory, and was later extended in the 15th century. The property went into a slow decline and by the 19th and 20th centuries it was heavily sub-divided and in an increasingly poor physical condition. It was bought by the York Archaeological Trust in 1987, renamed Barley Hall, and heavily restored to form a museum. The hall is rebuilt as it might have appeared in 1483, with recreation furniture from that period based on an inventory of 1478.
Thank you Lora, I'm sure that over the hundreds of years there must have been many fascinating stories but sadly little is recorded in the history books about this site.
Thank you Helen - funnily enough my daughter had a voluntary job at the Visitor Information Centre in York during her summer break between her time at university in Geneva and her return to Lancaster university. She looked fine in a bright pink t-shirt that they provide, but I really don't think it would suit me!
Thank you Bob, you're quite right, there are so many hidden places as well as the well known tourist sites. I've been in York over 40 years and I'm still learning!
Thank you Bob, it is pretty well hidden, except that when I went to take these shots, there was a huge school party and I had to wait for them to move on.
Thank you Caren - York is just full of history!
