Ghost Ship Sinking? by if1

Ghost Ship Sinking?

271 - Today's collage combines two recent themes that have appeared in my project. Firstly, flooding remains in York, although levels have fallen, and secondly there are two more ghost signs on this building.

The building is now used as the Waterside Restaurant, and it is situated on Kings Staith, beside the River use, and close to the Kings Arms, which I've included before ( http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-11-27, http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-07-22, and http://365project.org/if1/365/2012-06-24).

The flood water in the top image of the collage is receding now, and is about 1.5 metres below it's highest point earlier in the week.

On the upper part of the building are two ghost signs revealing that this was once the Ship Inn. On the left a painted sign where the former name has almost disappeared, and on the right a wooden board where the name can be seen highlighted by the low sun. Both are shown in more detail in the lower two frames of this collage.
Great pic with very interesting background info

I like the top pic in itself. Is there a reason there were so many of these painted signs, or do you just have more buildings that have survived the years?

OMG! York is having one heck of a time! You have documented a bad situation very nicely!

Great photo and a great idea to combine the two themes in one.... I love the history you show us... I really hope you guys don't have too much more rain this year...

This collage is arranged very well to show the signs. The story with it is great also. Nicely presented.

The floods in York are always spectacular. I was there this time last year. Great shot and interesting details.

Hopefully these lovely old buildings won't have too much damage from the flooding. They look pretty substantial, though.

Wow there is still a lot of water there

@shweetheart

Thank you Helen - I think it would have been better not to have added the close-ups of the signs. I don't really know why there are so many ghost signs here. Looking at old photos of other towns suggests that they were fairly common in lots of places. Certainly a lot of old buildings survive here and are refurbished rather than replaced, but I suspect that there are still lots of these around elsewhere too - we tend to look around and not up. I'll be keeping a look-out as I visit other places in the coming months.

@gnilrets

Thank you Sterling - the good news is that the water has fallen about 2 metres from its peak a few days ago, and there is little rain in the immediate forecast, so it should continue to fall.

@roslynjoy

Thank you Roslyn - not much rain for the next few days forecast, which will be a big help!

Thank you Heather, glad you like it.

@pyrrhula

Thank you Pyrrhula - the weather forecast is pretty dry for the next few days, so the water should soon clear.

Thank you Bob, glad you like it.

@busylady

Thank you Judith - somehow water in the streets always does impress, but fortunately not too many streets are affected nowadays, thanks to the flood defences.

@ladyjane

Thank you Ladyjane - these buildings are quite used to floods! Some have been modified to minimise the effects of flood water so they can get back to business quickly when the water subsides.

@bkbinthecity

Thank you Brian - I checked an hour ago and the flood level has dropped by about 2 metres since it's peak, so the river will soon be back in it's channel.

@wilbo43

Thank you Bill - I think the water was flowing rather too fast for a gondola!

@tonydebont

Thank you Tony - the flood story is almost over - for now!

Great capture, let's hope the worst is over!

I love the look of your town. The buildings are so cool. I'm glad the worst of the flooding is over.

Wonder how much business is lost during the times of the flood. next year when we visit Germany again I'll have to take a closer look at their old buildings to see if they have these ghost signs. your collage shows the high waters well. I can't imagine what it would be like to live with that and from what I read it happens often..how much rainfall do you usually get?
December 3rd, 2012
I can't believe you still have so much flooding! great ghost signs,too!

@rhos

Thank you Ann - the river is now down to 1.5 metres above normal, so it is totally within it's banks, and the clean-up can begin.

@clmiller

Thank you Caren, there are some lovely old buildings here. The river is now back in it's course, so the clean-up starts.

@bruni

Thank you Bruni - most businesses and houses are protected by flood defences, so not too much effect on businesses really. We've had three floods this year, which is more than usual. Rainfall isn't very heavy in York itself, about 66cm per year, but there are three rivers that flow from higher wetter areas and these rivers converge just north of York - they are the source of the floods. Ghost signs are more common than I thought, but so often we don't look up and notice them. I've seen photos of examples in North America, so they are pretty widespread.
