Dutch oven campfire cooking? I’d never heard of it, but I learned soon after searching the internet for campfire recipes that Dutch oven campfire cooking held a mystery and magic I wanted to explore. I did my research and excitedly chose a 6-quart size; but when it arrived, I struggled to wrestle the way-heavier-than-anticipated cast iron pot out of its box while wondering how on earth??? Thankfully, my discouragement quickly disappeared as I discovered one delicious recipe after another; and I decided on three for our first trip.
We all found it funny how the blueberry cobbler recipe stated exactly how many hot coals to place below the oven and above on the lid — not one more or one less! — and how the pot should be turned counter-clockwise and the lid turned clockwise once during baking. We couldn’t resist peeking into the pot early and, admittedly, without much confidence after the afternoon’s attempt at Dutch oven cooking produced soggy campfire nachos. When our eyes met the golden brown, bubbly blueberry goodness within, we all shrieked with surprise — SUCCESS! We topped each scoop with whipped cream and savored each bite beneath the Big Dipper.
The laughter stays with me still as I recall the yummy cobbler — and I’m more determined than ever to tweak that campfire nachos recipe until it produces a successful result as well!
