What a grand idea! I can't crochet at present, but for our "ferals" who never leave the yard, I've made a couple beds with recently-purchased fluffy bath rugs and an old wool throw. I was so delighted when I saw they were actually using those! Your photo is a beautifully accomplished one, and the story is so endearing!
