Our community developed in the 1700s as a rural farming community; and in the late 1800s, the discovery of coal brought new development. I love the rich history and the fact that some of the original farms and miners' homes still remain.
This memorial honors the coal miners who worked in the mines, which were active from 1872-1979; and I finally got the opportunity to photograph the authentic, old mine cart. I originally set out to photograph the dramatic lighting we had the joy of witnessing on the drive home; but by the time I ran into the house to grab my camera and we ventured back out, the best of the lighting was gone. We turned around to go home in the parking lot beside this memorial, and there came my long-awaited opportunity. I love that a touch of the unusual lighting can still be seen in the distance.
I praise you, Lord, for the long-awaited opportunity to photograph this old mine cart, which struck my fancy the first time I laid eyes upon it.
