MSM Milky Way by jgpittenger

MSM Milky Way

Best on black. We finally had a clear night sky without a big moon so I went shooting. Unfortunately there was light pollution from a couple of fishing boats out in the ocean in the distance. This was shot using Move Shoot Move tracker with f 2, ISO 500, and 90 seconds shutter. Unfortunately it was really windy so most of my MSM 90 sec exposures were blurry but I'm pretty happy with this one. The foreground was shot about an hour earlier than the sky.

Great photo. It is amazing how much after glow there is at the beach from sunset. Fishing boats? Well, it is dark out there :-)

Your Milky Ways are always so stunning, largely because you know how to blend a foreground that gives such interest to your compositions. Nice!

I am so jealous. Wish I had a spot that only had that much light pollution. Amazing capture. I've got one other spot that I'm wanting to try if I can just get a clear night.

Beautiful capture. I have not taken one shot of the Milky Way.

I happen to like the glow from the boats, they help give a horizon line

This is incredible, Jane! I've not heard of MSM -- a camera setting? An app? The result is just mesmerizing! And congrats of course on TT!

@taffy thanks MSM is a pretty cheap star tracker that allows you to take long exposures with low ISO without the stars stretching out. It’s called move shoot move
September 30th, 2022
@jgpittenger Is it an external accessory or an app? Or a setting on the camera? I've never used a star tracker so am not sure even what that is. Being able to get such sharp stars is fantastic! I need to learn how to do this.
September 30th, 2022
@taffy it is a device that you place on your tripod and then attach your camera to it. You line in up to Polaris with an included laser light and when you turn the device on it moves your camera so keep it in the same relationship with the stars as they move. I can show it to you on zoom one day if you’d like

Wow!!! I’ve got to get my MSM out again and figure it out… it doesn’t help that I live in an area with rampant light pollution… it has been so long since I used it I’d be clueless.

@kvphoto yes, I set it up at home a couple of times and reread the instructions and then practiced off my deck which is a terrible composition but at least I can see Polaris from the deck this time of year
