This weeks Dogwood challenge was to manually create an HDR image by using a shot with different exposures and then blending or merging them together. I used the Nik collection two different ways but I am leaning to the 3 images merged result.
The image on the left is 3 images merged while the right is only one image using tone mapping in the Nik collection which simulates the HDR effect. Both images have the deep 1 filter from Nik applied.
I have more to learn and try out so I will post another try later this week.
I really enjoy doing HDR - seeing all the colours shown together. These are lovely. I think the one on the left gives a deeper reflection to the water.
I think the first shot is slightly more punchy, but they are both great responses. Interesting that you did this in Nik, I didn't even know it was possible to merge 3 pics in that program.
@s4sayer Don't forget the luck aspect. I need to keep trying. I am just tickled that I found a pond that still has water in it in August.
@megpicatilly Doing it manually makes me think and that is good for this old lazy lady.
@rjb71 HDR is fun and fairly easy. The deep 1 filter is in the color efex section, I think that it is also called 03 filter. It is one of the presets since I haven't the courage or technical skill to set my own yet.
@stephanies I agree, the Nik collection has the HDR merge feature which on my version is near the top of the option panel. I have a old Photoshop version CS5 so yours may be slightly different. I like that I didn't have line up the images myself which would have been a whole ball of wax that I wouldn't want to tackle.
I think I agree with you about the lower half of the photos. But there is something about the sky in the photo on the left which seems a little too much. If I might ask, what is the Nik collection? Anyway, very interesting to see two ways to skin the same cat.
Ahh, I checked it out, I don't have it, apparently it doesn't load/work in photoshop elements.... not to worry though, I found a merge option in that program which gave the option of merging manually or smart merge, I took the easy option ofcourse.
@mbrutus I have lots to learn about ev+ and ev- and how to work with them. I did this by manually adjusting things, next time I may use the EV setting on my camera. The Nik collection is a add-on for photoshop.( https://www.google.com/nikcollection/) It is really a lot of fun.
@stephanies easy is best and much less frustrating.
