We went to the garden centre today and ordered a tonne of gravel (an absolute bargain compared to small bags) and, inspired by the botanic gardens, brought home some cornus with different coloured stems. The sky was looking very threatening as we left and halfway home a major blizzard was underway. If I’d had my proper camera I may have insisted on Nigel pulling over so I could get some Christmas card photos in the bag but visibility was actually dreadful as we passed King’s College. By the time we got home and put the kettle on it had turned into a very photogenic snow fall but sadly too short lived to make it worth heading back out. Fingers crossed for some more in the next few days.
Weather: Snow
Covid: Feeling quite down about it all - I fear even if (🙏🏻) we can get things under control with the vaccine it may actually make foreign travel more difficult especially with worse strains appearing all over the place. In most respects I’d live with that for a while but having a daughter in Canada does put a different slant on things. I’ll be more positive again soon - I’m sure therapeutics will come to our aid as well as vaccines.
Good things: My sister and paracetamol coming to dad’s rescue after his AZ vaccination yesterday making him feel really rather rough.
Beautiful! Not a flake here today though, not far from you either.
I share your thoughts re travel. It feels like a year or two before travel will be more commonplace again, but I feel for you with a daughter living abroad. ❤️
You certainly have to look for the positives at the moment.. feel very sorry for people with Children/family overseas..
Heres hoping you get that Christmas card photo ..
This is stunning. It was a wonderful snowstorm with big goose feather flakes. Lasted all of an hour sadly!
I lay awake worrying last night about our situation with the wretched virus and am scared life will never be the same again. I feel for everyone but particularly for the young separated from friends and social lives. Everything rests on the vaccines and treatments but I am worried about then variants now sweeping through.
I’m a hoping to feel more positive and reassured soon too
This is so cool. I do envy your snow. We got a bit of drizzle...
Know what you mean about travelling. It's the total absence of anything to look forward to that drags me down - even though I know we have it pretty lush compared to a lot of people.
What a beautiful garden you have! The snow gives it a fairytale look. Those fluffy flakes are magical (you would think with the amount of snow we get, I would be jaded). I would be happy to send you some!
Well that's very pretty and you went somewhere exciting! Im pretty gloomy about the virus too but I think that travel will have to become possible. It will just be a faff involving testing and the like.
Still nothing here. Looked like we were going to be getting some tomorrow, but that's looking unlikely now.... 🙁 Have you come across the coronavirus good news Twitter feed? https://twitter.com/Coronavirusgoo1?s=09
@lucycameron I’m sure we’ll get back eventually - I think there will be enough counter measures via vaccination and drugs to sort it out. We already go to places like the Caribbean that has dengue without much thought. I just keep thinking in 1939 nobody knew they were in for a 6 year haul!
@humphreyhippo well indeed - I have no real complaints as so many are in a much worse situation. I think the shopping areas being so devoid of life is part of the problem with me as I really feel for the shop owners. I suppose January is always a slow time though so maybe not so disastrous.
I was beginning to feel quite positive about life with the current lockdown and vaccines, but have slumped a bit in the last couple of days. It is going to be a long time until life is anything like normal by the looks of things. I really feel for you not being able to see Rachel. Our next door neighbours' two children live in Germany and the US. It is hard.
I e really been quite depressed over the last couple of days like most people...it’s seem all gloom & doom & I really thought we were getting somewhere at last but the news is not good. I was only thinking today & wondering when we will be able to travel again....I thought perhaps next year at this time but you begin to wonder about that now.
Glad you dad was looked after by your sister...this AZ vaccine is a bit different in that it seems to affect some people. Most have no side effects but the special ones like me & your dad ...ha ha get a little reaction. I’m fine today btw!
Your garden looks lovely & your snow flakes show up beautifully unlike mine!
@judithg Yes I did, it’s fine now but my friend & I both had a reaction, lots of others that went that day had no reaction though. Headache & tired & a slightly faster heart rhythm for a few hours. We are thinking that if we were unlucky enough to catch covid we might be the ones that were really ill but that’s only guessing! Hard on you dad though when he is unwell to start with. Paracetamol did wonders!
@happypat well hopefully it means you’ve got a good response! The AZ vaccine does get in your cells and start replicating using the adenovirus carrier part but then it can’t get any further because it doesn’t have all the genes. Your immune system kicking ill can include a fever so at least your body swung into action!
yes we had that, me and Ruby were caught in a snowstorm , we had our lunch , the streets and gardens were so photogenic, I watched football focus, and by 1.00 pm it had all but melted ...strange ....a lovely action shot of the snow
This is absolutely lovely! Beautiful snowflakes in your charming garden - so delightful. I'm just sorry you had a white knuckle trip home.
And so sorry to hear that your dad had a rough go with the vaccine. I hope his reaction is a brief one.
I'm with you on the virus blues. Now hearing news about a South African variant that is troublesome. Reports are claiming that N95 masks are the only safe option. I suspect PPE supplies will once again be an issue. All seems to be going around in circles.
